At times throughout the year, some posters start threads to pose a trade idea. If lots of people post trade ideas, it clutters up the forum, so we decided in 2006 to try to have one thread for "random trade ideas" that are not based on news involving the Rockets. They are simply, "What do you think about... " scenarios.

Here are the rules of the "Random Trade Idea" thread.

1) Keep your trade ideas realistic. We all know why the Rockets would want a superstar ... but try to ask the question "Why does it make sense for the other team?"

2) Don't be a jerk. There are going to be unrealistic scenarios posted ... just point out to them why it couldn't happen, if you feel so inclined. Report the post as ludicrous if you must, but don't nuke the poster and call them names. It spirals the thread down.

Previous threads for reference:

1st!

Trade Kevin Martin to Phoenix for a future 1st, Brad Miller's contract and Wes Johnson. Then deny his option, and you get your cap space back plus a 1st rounder, hopefully in the late lotto or mid teens.

Or you can roll the dice and try to get a 1st rounder from Orlando by trading Kevin Martin for Hedo.

Need to use Martin to take back a bad contract and get a pick, similar to the Baron Davis deal the Cavs got.

Firs...damn! Not much movement we should do now that Howard and Bynum are moved. Just don't trade for 3rd tier stars like Al, P.Gasol, Jsmith, Gay, etc.

Rule #3: You can't propose a trade with Al Jefferson or [piece that will lead to (more) mediocrity] going to Houston.

no more divas with their panties bunched up are left! what do we do now????
panic button, where are you?

I'd trade Martin before the deadline to boston or the spurs for some fajitas or clam chowder. God knows, those teams will need all the ammunition going into the playoffs. Martin coming off the bench for 16 points...that's plenty useful.

Kevin Martin + Raptors pick + Donatas + Lamb + Parsons + Lin
for
Al Harrington + Arron Afflalo + bad contracts

The Rockets get two players who are good enough to be centerpieces in a superstar trade.
The Rockets can then patiently and confidently start Kevin Love hunt, because now they'll finally have assets that other GMs value a lot.

Honestly, you're not going to get a "first-tier" superstar like a Howard (I don't consider Bynum on that level, yet). Houston was never ending up with him in the first place. He would have likely walked at the end of the season, so the risk (what Orlando was asking for) wasn't worth it. And trading for expiring contracts like a Josh Smith or Al Jefferson doesn't make sense if you're going to give up Terrence Jones or Royce White. You can get those guys as free agents after the season (I'd prefer Jefferson over Smith, though I'm not a big fan of either guy).

If I was Morey, I'd go after Al Horford (stats). I know many consider him "third-tier," but you have to examine him more in-depth. He's 26 and isn't making an unreasonable salary ($12 million per for 4 years). A change of scenery would do him well. IMO, he's capable of being an 18 and 10 guy and would be a plus defender at the 4 spot. He's been playing out of position his entire NBA career (he played the 4 at Florida next to Noah) and next to Josh Smith, who likes to shoot...a lot. The past 3 seasons, Horford has shot 55% from the field on an average of 11 shots a game. Bump that number up to maybe 15, and he's probably an 18-20 ppg guy.

With Lin running the P&R with him, it would not surprise me if his efficiency increases (see Tyson Chandler, who Horford finishes better than). He's played with low-assist guys like Mike Bibby and Jeff Teague and an offense run through Joe "Iso-Joe" Johnson and Josh "Chucker" Smith. It's not hard to see how his numbers may have been suppressed.

A trade of:

Quote:
Atlanta
Kevin Martin (expiring contract)
Marcus Morris
Terrence Jones or Royce White
Gary Forbes

Houston
Al Horford
Anthony Morrow (expiring contract)
DeShawn Stevenson (non-guaranteed after this season)
would make sense for both teams. Atlanta gets even more cap space for summer 2013 (and do a complete makeover) and good young prospects in Jones and Morris. Houston gets a post anchor in Horford, retains more than enough cap space to go after a max free agent like a James Harden in summer 2013, and gets to keep their 3 of their promising rookies (especially Lamb and Motiejunas).

If the Rockets are going to surprise people this season, they are going to have to be a Top 5-10 defensive team. A frontline of Horford and Asik, IMO, is top-tier defensively. Parsons has shown well defensively thus far. Lin can be good defensively.

Atlanta Hawks - Houston Rockets Trade

Milwaukee gets - Kevin Martin

Houston gets - Devin Harris

From the Rockets perspective, we get a much needed back-up PG, while also opening up playing time for Jeremy Lamb.

As for the Hawks they get a starting caliber SG to replace Joe Johnson, while still having flexibility going forward.

Utah Jazz - Houston Rockets Trade

Utah gets - Patrick Patterson and Marcus Morris

Rockets get - Enes Kanter

From Utah's perspective with Derrick Favors being the future Center of the Utah Jazz and Millsap only having one year left on his contract, Patterson gives them insurance and depth at a position of need. They also get a young SF with scoring potential in Marcus Morris.

As for the Rockets we get rid of depth that opens up minutes for guys like Motiejunas and Jones, and we also get a young center w/t upside in return. Not to mention Kanter and Jones are familiar with each other having played together one year in kentucky.

Believe me, as a guy that has gotten to see the Warriors up close for the past 15+ years, you don't want Monta Ellis on your team regardless of how many points he puts up. There's a reason his career WS/48 (win shares per 48 minutes) is 0.073.

I like it a lot. - throw a pick and G.Smith in if we could get Alec Burks in return.
