http://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2014/1...-disappointing-start-dallas-mavericks-dilemma I rarely post anything but I figure this will be a pleasure to read for some clutchfans on here.
He's a role player. Period. They were fooled by Cubans' max salary contract implying he is something else. P. S. You should post this in the Dish.
Take this tcrap to the DISH. We have plenty of threads for non-contributing (scrubbish) players here in the GARM
Hilarious that Cuban paid Parsons for future/expected improvement, and refused to pay Nash due to future/expected regression. He doesn't seem to be good at offering salaries based on production 3 years from now... maybe he should just stick with what the player is, and how much value he provides to your team.
I really don't know why the writer and Mavs fans expected Parsons' defense to get BETTER when he just landed $15 million a year. If he barely gave a damn last year, technically his contract year, then why would he do so after getting dem checks?
Pretty well written piece. Honestly, I think Chandler will be fine. As was pointed out towards the end, he's more or less doing the same thing he did last year, just with a protracted shooting slump. He's never going to be worth that contract but he'll help the Mavs survive in the West even if they don't quite make it to contender status.
Parsons did initiate the offense a lot for the Rockets last season. You can tell despite their 11-3 start that they miss his playmaking abilities this year. That being said, when you're running the offense primarily through Dirk and Ellis, that doesn't leave a lot of opportunities for Parsons to handle the ball. What the Mavs are stuck with is a $15 million spot-up shooter with a flat shot who's a mediocre defender.
Favorite quotes: ----- Earlier this week I read a good take on Parsons by friend of the site Jason Gallagher. He made a really good point: Parsons learned to play NBA basketball in a much less sophisticated offensive system than what Dallas runs. Us simple minded Houstonians just can't grasp Dallas' complexity ----- He's shown some lapses in concentration, perhaps bad habits picked up from James Harden and Rockets coach Kevin McHale's lack of accountability for that sort of thing. Rockets preach the importance of playing bad defense, it is tough for someone to change their ways ----- The advanced metrics provide even more evidence that Parsons has been consistent with his career production. His PER (just under 16) and total rebounding percentage (just under 9 percent) are remarkably close to previous seasons. ... Even his defensive rating has been identical to the last two seasons (108, 108, 108). My favorite part-the realization that, wait a second, you mean that this is the guy that we paid for from the beginning? This is what he is supposed to do?
He was always good cutting off the ball to the basket though, not sure why his off the ball skills have deserted him in Dallas. Oh wells. I'm not complaining!

"Good cutter" might be a bit of an overstatement. He cut sometimes and he was an excellent finisher when he cut. The behavior described (hovering out at the top waiting for the ball) was pretty prevalent as a Rocket too, at least starting his sophomore year.
It was never about the player. It was about putting the squeeze on the guy who has acquired 2 superstars with spare change while his glamour locker rooms and supposed wunderkind head coach can't attract anybody but an impressionable young Hollywood like Chandler Parsons.
That's the key. Parsons is a good player, but he is being paid like a great player. Dallas expects him to improve his offensive numbers based on what? That he is "young"? He is older than Harden. That the Mavs have a "better offense"? The Mavs play at a slower pace than the Rockets did last year. His role isn't really expanded with the Mavs. He was a 3rd to 4th option on the Rockets and same for Dallas. I expect him to give about the same production as he gave Houston. There is no real reason to expect significantly more or less. At under a million dollars that's incredible production. At $15 million dollars it's over paying significantly.
