Parson will be fine. he is just trying too hard. Dallas got themselves a solid Third starter. Everyone needs to remember that it is natural for people to try too hard justify their worth. if anything, parson is being over paid 15 million over the life of the contract. which had the contract been 3 yrs 30 million, Morey would have likely matched.
Mavericks Math (2014-2015 Edition) 1 Dirk Nowitzki + 1 Brandan Wright + 1 Jose Barea = 1 Chandler Parsons = 1 Trevor Ariza + 1 Kostas Papanikoloau + 1 Isaiah Canaan + 1 Tarik Black
Championship, singular, not plural. Cuban is good at what he does, no doubt, but its gotta be disappointing see all that talent coming and going and only get one title out of it. I know it kills me about SF3, Yao, Tmac and the list goes on.
Parsons got out of the gate slowly last year. There's no reason he won't be a fine player for them. We already knew he would be overpaid.
And now he just sucks... as a human being. The chump is a good role player. If Cuban thinks Parsons is worth a max contract, power to him. It's his money.
He really isn't under performing that much production wise. Last year averages: 37.6 min 47.2 FG% 37% 3P% 5.5 REB 4 AST 1.2 STL 1.9 TO 16.6 PTS This year averages: 31.9 MIN 41.8 FG% 33.7 3P% 4.7 REB 2.2 AST .9 STL .9 TO 14.1 PTS Outside of his shooting %, you can argue he is over producing now considering he is playing 5.7 minutes less per game, and only averaging 2.4 points less, .8 REB less, 1.8 AST less, .3 STL less, and cut his turn overs from 1.9 to .9. He is in no way like Harden's situation. Harden went from bench player to primary scorer with a huge minutes increase. Parsons went from 3rd option to 3rd option playing less minutes. Probably because of his defense and possibly poor basketball conditioning as Carlisle alluded to earlier.
Bottom line, overpaid. I am glad the Rockets didn't match. Ariza isn't setting the world on fire right now either, but he is much like Parsons, a role player. Just not being paid like a super star.
That's been the story for all of the Mavericks all year though. They pick apart bad teams on defense and haven't been as successful against elite D's thus far like Houston (seems weird to type that) He had a pretty random distribution of good games/bad games last year - some good ones against Portland and Memphis, stinkers against the Clippers - I don't know if he qualifies as a flat-track bully. But he defienitely scores a lot more when his team is running riot and creates lots of transition opportunites.
last year 53% assisted, 95% on 3's. this year 42% assisted, 89% on 3's. from basketball reference. ding, ding, ding, we have a winner.
Can we stop looking at Parsons' contract on its own? It was made possible by Dirk ' s discount, which was specifically for Cuban to upgrade the roster. Save for Ariza, arguably, Chandler was the best wing available in free agency to them
The Mavs big problem now is a lousy defense. Seeing that Chandler's main job on the Mavericks appears to be spotting up in the corner while Dirk/Monta run pick & rolls, and that he's pretty much average on defense these days at best - it seems like Ariza would have been a better fit for them other than age, though the Mavs are clearly in win now mode anyway.
As long as that contract is crippling their cap space while keeping them from in the second tier of talent in the West I'm fine with Morey's decision. So far Moree's statement about finding (and underpaying) a player like Parsons is necessary to winning a championship. You don't wanna be the team that actually pays him his market value. It'll be interesting to see if the Spurs give a max extension to Leonard, another guy who seems to thrive in that particular system but would be grossly overpaid role player on another team.
Cuban paid LeFrentz 70 million and Dampier 73 million, and he kept paying top dollars for perceived potential or short past performance. Eventually, he was rewarded with 2 trips to the finals and 1 championship. Why are we worrying about his money? Parsons may never be an alpha dog on any team, but he has value and potential. As for the contract he's getting - he's got a good agent and Cuban is willing to pay.
Over the summer, "Is Parsons even their #1 option?" was a serious question. I asked it, at a time when many people thought he was actually going to be an option ahead of Dirk and Monta Ellis. To that extent, if Cuban ever had any thought of Parsons being the #1 option, Parsons is certainly underperforming. I remember also asking "Is Parsons a guy you give the game winning shot to?" People are hardly considering those questions anymore. I just think Monta Ellis and Dirk are such scorers, that big contract is paying for a #2.5 option at best. So I agree with you that his performance is pretty much in line with his last season's performance, but his contract is so different.
By the way, Dirk is on fire right now. FG% .517 3P% .429 career #'s FG% .477 3P% .384 He's also out-rebounding Parsons, 7.2 to 5.3 (per 36).
