NBA admits missed call on Dwight Howard in overtime

The "foul" that put gave Beverly his 6th sure looked like it was Beverly only fouling the air when they showed the replay on TV. That shouldn't be discounted either. The Blazers had some go against them as well, but the worst with the worst timing went against the Rockets.

I just do not get this obsession in sports with not allowing instant replay for fouls. They'll spend 5 minutes looking to see who knocked a ball out of bounds. I'm not discounting the importance of this, but fouls can easily have as much, if not likely more, of an impact on the way a game is played than getting possession of the ball right one time. And I don't think it should be limited to the final two minutes of a game or overtime or whatever. Our two bigs were in foul trouble most of the game. Anybody think that them having to dial it back didn't allow Aldridge at least a few more open shots?

The NBA has already admitted that it CAN determine fouls from instant replay with the new flagrant foul review rules. In fact, in that case, they're trying to determine from video something even harder to discern than whether a person was simply fouled or not; they're actually trying to determine the intent of a foul based on video. We have a vast legal system that still struggles daily with determining the intent of a person's actions. If that is what the NBA is attempting to do in only a couple minutes with flagrant reviews, then surely they could determine whether someone was even fouled or not much more quickly and easily.

Of course, to do this would require some sort of additional constant video oversight like they do in hockey, so the refs on the court aren't totally responsible for everything. But it's proven time and again just by watching basketball on TV for decades that replays can be pulled up in a few seconds and usually everyone can see immediately what happened. Even basketball, one of the fastest sports out there could accommodate a certain level of replays for fouls without the game dragging on forever. Sheesh, in the amount of time refs spend on one replay now, any broadcast team can sort out 10 close plays with their replay speed.

Regardless of the deficiencies of the Rockets' play in the first game, they were fighting a system that changed the style of play for both teams drastically, especially for the Rockets. No game played so closely could possibly end with one team having zero free throw attempts at the end of the first half without terrible or tainted referreeing. The NBA is just smirking as they freely admit they got a single call wrong. Nothing can be done at this point, but they get to act like they just went to confession and are now absolved of their sins. No, guys. Either start working on meaningful changes that won't let this happen again to any team or just shut the hell up, because nobody actually cares about your faux apology after the fact.

    1)It was Freeland.
    2)You can't hack with less than 2 minutes left, that's a tech.

Nice going, calling their intentions "blatantly obvious" despite the fact you have absolutely no idea what was happening.

    On topic:
The officiating was horrible both ways in this game. Rolo's 5th (I think) foul should have been a flagrant 1 or at least an offensive foul on Dwight. Just because they screwed us with the last and most obvious call doesn't mean we're the only victims here. The game would have been much different if the refs didn't absolutely suck.

These announcements are a joke. If you're not gonna take any action for your employees being worthless at their jobs, what's the point of publicly acknowledging their incompetence? Wasn't Scott Foster the most called number by Donaghy (even above his bookie) during that investigation? How the hell is this guy still employed?

I like how ESPN's NBA scoreboard now has the line and the over/under.

Yeah I've noticed that. I thought gambling used to be taboo and we needed to "think of the children!". Now it seems the betting line is just another statistic. Not that I mind or anything. I think gambling should be 100% legal and places like Galveston could greatly financially benefit from casinos.

refs should get fined for calls like that or at least banned from officiating further playoff games.

The worst thing about NBA officials: they calls things in anticipation of what they think is (likely) going to happen or call based on how a player reacts, jumps, falls down etc. If they just called only what they saw, then there would be much less problems.

With Beverley's 6th, he didn't touch him but because of his reputation and the way Lilliard was going to the basket, he figured he would foul him. Same with Garcia's block on Aldridge, it was cleaner than clean, it was Battier like. But because the referee figured Garcia would foul since Aldridge had space to shoot, foul.

In general, both teams suffered from the calls by the referees. The FT disparity in the first half was partly because we didn't attack the basket, but also some no calls. Then in the 2nd half they tried to make up for it, which is why I think Lopez got some fouls - especially the one they reviewed - that was either a foul on someone else or a no call.
The one by Howard was blatantly obvious that he was held so there is zero excuse for that to be called, even if they tried to make up for something.

Honestly wtf was Harden doing for a like half the game? Like I love him to death but bro, your game is attacking the basket! He wanted to KO Portland so bad with those 3's. Isn't Portland like the #2 worst team at giving up points in the paint? I expect at least 30(an efficient 30) game 2.

The 6th foul on Lopez and the "near tech" on him was equally as bad as Dwight's 6th foul. All in all a poorly called game on both sides. Donaghy quote aligns with what I saw.
