We didn't have Finnish food daily, and some of it was midwesternized that my grandmother cooked: Their meatballs are good, cinnamon buns, had meat pies a few times and loved them but I think it was a lot of work. Salmon and herring whatever was always good, but I can't recall exactly what it was. And the split pea soup with ham chunks, probably my favorite. Never got to try reindeer because this was in the 70's and 80's and getting exotic meat in Houston back then was near impossible. When my mother got her **** together and I moved in with her and my stepfather when I was 7 the food wasn't this sort of authentic cuisine because my mother cooked for my stepfather and he was a good old boy redneck coonass (but that food was good too). Grandfather taught me about the concept of Sisu, something that's stuck with me to this day. I'll have to get some recipes from my grandmother before she kicks the bucket. She's 96 and going strong but you never know.
Sushi easy. But two of my faves are MF Sushi and Captain Toms. Not sure if the latter counts as fish and chips but I always get the catfish and fries and its still the best fried catfish bar none.
Not if you don't care about food being a work of culinary and aesthetic art. Both end up looking the same.
Appearance is considered part of the appeal of food. On cooking competitions appearance is one of the factors they use to determine the better dish.
I think that people are more discerning when it comes to food these days but that’s like my opinion man.
It’s not a zero sum game. Something that is beautifully plated makes a great tasting meal a better experience. I don’t feel that you have to pick one or the other.
Who said it's a zero sum game? Nobody is saying you have to pick one or the other. Personally I could care less how beautifully plated something is and nothing has ever tasted better to me because of the presentation, either it's good or its not. This coming from a person who cooks a lot and takes care to present what I cook some kind of way but at the end of the day I am way more concerned with taste than looks. But hey that's just like my opinion man.
Have I said how something looks does not matter? I have no idea what that question has to do with anything? If something did not taste right would you still order it since it looks good? Since we are going down this road.
Of course not but you keep giving examples of picking one or the other which is why I used the zero sum example. I wasn’t trying to be antagonistic so I’m not following the vitriol but whatever. Fish and chips is by and large bar food. I love bar food and I love fish and chips! But, for me at least, sushi kicks fish and chips ass and it’s not even a close competition. My wise mother likes to say, “ya can’t help what ya like and ya can’t help what ya don’t like”.
With all of these threads it depends on what you're hungry for. Best Fish & Chips in Houston I've found is The Phoenix on Westheimer. Best Sushi for the buck is at AKA Sushi House. Damn near HH prices all day.
