There are some people (mostly non-Rockets fans understandably) who are still unsure of the Rockets cap situation and how Dwight's max ($20.5 million) can be afforded. By declining Delfino, Brooks, Anderson, Ohlbrecht, and Garcia, Houston have $16,181,453 in cap space. From there, by trading Thomas Robinson (without taking any salary in return) the cap space moves to $19,707,893 which is close enough considering how much Dwight saves from the fact Texas is an income tax-free state ($4,786,713.82 over 4 years, or $1,094, 342.38 compared to what he would make with the Lakers over 4 years). However, if Dwight wants more the Rockets can also use the Stretch Provision on Royce White which opens up an additional $656,320 in cap room. Here are the calculations:

NOTE: All cap space amounts are calculated to an estimated salary cap of $58.5 million.

    James Harden: $13,668,750
    Omer Asik: $8,374,646
    Jeremy Lin: $8,374,646
    Thomas Robinson: $3,526,440
    Royce White: $1,719,480
    Terrence Jones: $1,551,840
    Donatas Motiejunas: $1,422,720
    Chandler Parsons: $926,500
    Greg Smith: $884,293
    Patrick Beverley: $788,872
    Tyler Honeycutt: $100,000 (waived)
    Roster charge: $490,180
    Roster charge: $490,180

    Total = $42,318,547 = $16,181,453 in cap room
    - Thomas Robinson ($3,526,440) = $19,707,893 in cap room
    - Savings from waiving and stretching Royce White ($656,320) = $20,364,213

For those who are wondering why Asik and Lin's contracts aren't around the $5 million mark, the poison pill contract structure of 5/5/15 only applies to the team that matches (New York, Chicago) otherwise it's averaged out roughly 8.4/8.4/8.4.

    I hope this helps.

If you trade Thomas Robinson (or stretch Royce White), you need to account for the additional roster charge that would occur.

It looks you did that for White, but not for Robinson.

I'd rather trade Thomas Robinson, but depending on what we can get for T-Rob and what we can get for Lin, trading Lin isn't out of the question.

I can't think of a team that really would want Lin and his contract.

I understand your sentiment. Even if a team is willing to take Lin, I don't think we will get a good offer.

Good thread and thanks for translating the complicated cap situation into simple language that most posters will be able to understand more clearly.

Major props to you if your calculations are accurate.

And it is only 2 years. Someone would definitely take it, problem is the Rockets probably wouldnt get much in return.

    Good job, 2016Champions.

Just a heads up -- Bima wrote a cap update yesterday and it will go out tonight for July 1.

If we sign Dwight, Lin or Asik will definitely be gone since we'll need the additional cap space to fill out the roster. Most likely Lin (in a package with T Rob)to Sixers with maybe something like Thaddeus Young/Glen Rice Jr to Rockets.

If we sign another top player (Smith, Iggy, Millsap, Aldridge, Rondo) in addition to Dwight, both Lin and Asik will be gone. Can see Asik going to Sixers, Hawks, Blazers, Celtics, or Lakers.

Maybe this just me and my naive hope but I really really doubt that we'll give Howard the super-duper max contract, so we might not need that extra cap space. Lakers are not gonna give 117 million for 5 years. No way.

Getting full cap room is really no problem.

A third of the league has cap space, not to mention potential 3 team trades that bring the rest of the league into play.

A package of T-Rob and Smith would be extremely enticing, you could force them to take Royce White. All three have team options after this year so you would have all your cap room next year. Adding Smith seems like a worst case scenario.

If we can find a way to bring Garcia back, a bench of Asik, Garcia, Beverly and hopefully an improved D-Mo is good enough. Not to mention bandwagon vets willing to play for the minimum. Filling out a roster after you get the primaries is cake, look what the heat did.
