What you don't know and really what the case hinges on is the cause/validation for self defense on either side for the first event and who was the imminent threat for the other assaults. It's arguable that a man armed with a semi-automatic assault rifle is not in fear of his life evidenced by the fact that he willingly placed himself in an obviously dangerous situation. it's arguable that he was in fact the immanent threat to protesters who responded in fear of their lives, the first shot, then the second shot then the third shot.
