Ron Artest made a couple of unsolicited comments about Chuck in his most recent interviews. I find these interesting in light of the following facts:

    (1) Chuck Hayes was the best Artest stopper I remember seeing, and
    (2) some of the comments people have made about wanting to dump Chuck.

Specifically, when asked if he's going to play a lot of PF with the Rockets, Ron generally said he would play whereever coach tells him to play, but mentioned "Scola is a great PF. Chuck Hayes is a great PF."

At the airport today, Ron mentioned he's looking forward to playing with Yao, Shane, Tracy and Rafer, and Hayes. He specifically talked about how he was looking to "get[ting] a chance to be on the same team as Hayes, in stead of battling with him all the time."

Artest is not a guy who randomly sucks up to teammates, either. When asked earlier about whether he's looking forward to playing with instead of agaisnt Battier, he said "Battier can't stop me."

In any case, anyone who doesn't think Hayes is useful to this team can eat it. Chuck is Artest Approved (in addition to being Thibodeau Approved)

Nobody denies the fact that Chuck is a great defensive player and a great rebounder, but he is still an offensive liability and could barely make wide open layups even with TMac's passes.

Hayes offensive liability would be offset a little bit if he could dunk. But he can't and I've seen him blow so many wide open layups.

No one's saying Hayes isn't a gifted defensive player, he just blows horse balls on the offensive end. :)

Hayes does not blow a much higher % of his layups than Scola or Yao.

His offense is also significantl better than that of other defensive specialists such as Jason Collins or Ben Wallace.

The layups that Hayes blows are usuallly almost WIDEOPEN. He should be able to take a step and do a reverse dunk. Also I find it hard to believe that his offense is SIGNIFCANTLY better than Wallace.

That said, he does have his place, against certain matchups.

Assuming we get Landry back, where do you expect Hayes to fit? Not to mention that we got Dorsey. I just don't see any room with him.

Hayes improved his layup dependability drastically.

I am a huge Hayes fan. The majority of this BBS has no concept of how valuable the guy is. Thank god the coaches in the league understand the impact he provides. Yao and McGrady are two of the most unstoppable forces in basketball, a good coach should be able to find a role for a non-offensive player on the floor next to those two.

Exactly. If Landry is resigned, I see Hayes getting similar limited minutes to what he received after the emergence of Landry and Scola.

Hayes is no Artest stopper and certainly Artest wouldn't say it if he were asked. Once thing I've learned from listening to Artest speak is that he doesn't believe he can be stopped by anybody.

i like hayes as a 15ish minute per game player. both he and scola have been great. landry, too..but not sure if he's coming back.

i'm happy that we have these guys (plus dorsey, most likely) over juwan howard and whoever else we've had at the 4 spot in recent seasons

He can barely make wide open layups, and he's averaged 56% from the field for his career. Go figure.

That's not a great % when you consider most shots hayes takes are wide open.

What percentage of his shots would you characterize as "wide open layups"? How about a ballpark figure?

Chuck rarely creates a shot for himself, but that in itself does not make it a wide open shot. He typically rushes the shot over a defender or he tries to reverse it to prevent getting blocked. When you're 6'5 and earthbound, scoring inside is not easy.

Anyways, if we say that every shot he takes is a wide open layup, he's shot 56% on them at a minimum. That's somewhat better than "can barely make a wide open layup".

And right under the basket to boot.

Hayes fans need to remember how quickly his minutes got slashed when we found two PF who could score.

Speciality matchup defesne-- dealing with guys Landry, Scola or Yao cannot defend, injury insurance, foul trouble insurance, when you absolutely have to get a stop at the end of a quarter, playing apparent garbage time while preventing opposing teams from a 4th qtr comeback (which, by the way, had happene dto the Rockets in recent years) in order to save the other guys' legs and prevent injury resulted from wear and tear, keeping Ron Artest in check in practice.

There are plenty of things a player can do outside of regular rotation, and at less than $2 million a year, the price is right.

If you are going to trade him in some sort of package deal because he is outside of the regular rotation, there is no point unless you are getting someone who will make the regular rotation (top 8 or 9 guys), and there really isn't anything out there available that would beat out Yao, McGrady, Artest, Scola, Rafer, Battier, Landry, Barry, Brooks, Mutombo (and, if healthy, Francis).

All of these options we have in PF, to think that we only had Juwan Howard not too long ago.
