I would extend this to include any regime with a superman complex partnering with the local neighborhood extremist in their part of the world. Russia, half of south America, half of Africa, and portions (if not the entirety) of the US government have all made this mistake, and continue to make this mistake without learning the same lesson you've alluded to. It's weird.

Groups like these prey on the emptiness of young men among other things. Many want to live and die for something higher than themselves. This is a twisted form of that.
