Per Fox: Mutombo for Wilks, Pike, Griffin. Bulls owners need to approve trade and NBA does. Could happen as early as next week. Also Wilks said he will resign so trade could happen.
I remember when Griffin messed up that defensive play against the Suns. That doomed him with JVG. Boki gets more time at the 3 this year. Padgett plays some 3 too. I'm glad this deal is getting done.
I second that thought! Interesting though that the exact offer was on the table a month ago and it took this long to get an agreement on it. What was the big hold up?
I see this being talked about on the JustBBall Forums, but I can't find any official sources confirming this. Did anyone else hear this?
I don't like Deke. I never really liked him as a player when he was in his prime. I don't like him now that's he's horrible, with the mobility of a pregnant wildebeast. I may be in the minority - but we had better backup center options on the roster w/o this trade.
Mutombo, if traded before October, could only be dealt alone due to restrictions. If Chandler were coming here, it would have been an entirely seperate deal of Mutombo.
mutambo is only here for season or so and we gonna have to look for backup center next year again.....
wilks and griffin were just throws in, neither of them would have made the active 12 man roster (unless willks beat out gaines, even then he would still only be the 4th string pg)
pg - ward/sura/lue/gaines sg - mcgrady/sura sf - jackson/nachbar pf - howard/taylor/weatherspoon c - ming/motumbo
That may be true, but Pike, Wilks, and AG weren't any of those options, so it's sort of a low risk situation. If Mutombo doesn't work out we can trade him to a team that wants an expiring contract at the deadline.
Looks pretty much like a done deal. Here's the Chronicle: HoustonChronicle.com -- http://www.HoustonChronicle.com | Section: Sports Sept. 2, 2004, 10:18PM Rockets reportedly close to deal for Mutombo Associated Press The Houston Rockets are close to a deal that would add veteran center Dikembe Mutombo as the backup to Yao Ming, a television station reported Thursday. ADVERTISEMENT The Rockets would send Eric Piatkowski, Adrian Griffin and Mike Wilks to the Chicago Bulls, Houston television station KRIV said in a report citing anonymous NBA sources. The deal, which could be done as early as next week, needs the approval of Bulls ownership and the NBA, the station said. Hey, looks like it's happening. I wish we were getting someone younger and more active, but Deke, if heathy, will be an excellent backup. I hope he doesn't do that finger waggin' junk here. Another ex-Knick. (sigh) Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson declined comment. Wilks, a free agent, would have to sign with the Rockets first. "I have considered this deal to be imminent for about a month," his agent, Bill Neff, said. "In the last week, Carroll Dawson asked me not to sign Mike Wilks with someone else. If it was anybody but Carroll Dawson, I would probably ignore them. Mike Wilks will not be an issue." Mutombo, an eight-time All-Star and four-time defensive player of the year, has averaged 12.2 points, 12.1 rebounds and 3.33 blocked shots in 13 years with New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Denver. He is fourth in NBA history with 2,996 blocks. He played in 65 games with the Knicks last season, averaging 6.7 rebounds and 5.6 points, before being traded to the Bulls. edit: I don't think we're done dealin' yet.
