I still don’t understand why they had to trade a 2nd just to get rid of Osweiler, when they could’ve just cut him. The third year of the contract wasn’t even guaranteed. They didn’t even spend the money on free agency.
It saved $10 mil in cap room per reports to trade him as opposed to cutting him. Widely thought that the money would help bring Romo in. But instead he retired and we let our best CB walk.
The toughest part of losing the 4th pick is we could've had Micah Fitzpatrick and been set at safety for 10+ years
To be fair, Bouye signed the day before the Osweiler deal. I'm not defending the deal: it was remarkably stupid. But they did not trade Osweiler, free up cash AND THEN let Bouye walk.
They applied most of that money to Hopkins' roster bonus. Instead of having roster bonuses paid incrementally, the entire $8.5 was paid at once freeing up that cash for subsequent off seasons. Not defending the move, just saying that the cash didn't exactly go to waste either.
According to here: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/houston-texans/cap/2017/ They had 11mil still left so they could have just ate his salary.
Not if they wanted a shot at Romo they couldn't have. Think folks are forgetting that we traded Osweiler to free up cap space for Romo. It was a gamble and we eventually lost out but a lot of people applauded it since at that time, it was widely believed Romo would get eventually be released and didnt think he'd actually retire.
If I were the Browns I wouldn't even draft a QB until later in the draft. None of these guys are worth a top 10 pick. I would take Barkeley 1st. He would make Deshone Kizer look like Dak Prescott.
Hurts because we signed him in the first place. But worth it in terms of how God awful he was. Haha he was worth a few firsts, perhaps.
