JR Smith is the reigning 6th man of the year. He constantly asked to be the starter last season and he wants to start this season when he is healthy. Most NBA players prefer to start than to be the 6th man.

The move, whether you like it or not (and I'm ambivalent), wasn't done for the "sake of change." It was done to improve the defense of the starting unit and the offense of the second unit.

1.) 8 games in, a 46 minute double OT game greatly skews MPG

2.) GS has been blowing out their opponents = starters sitting out most of the 4th.

Jeremy is clearly the better player of him vs Bev.

JHarden is one of the worst defender in the league. You do not make him a 6th man and start a defensive specialist.

Jeremy's defense is not nearly as bad as Harden. Jeremy is getting better and this year he is at least avg and might be slightly better than avg on D for a NBA pg. He only has trouble with small pg who are elite like CP3 but then again every PG in the NBA has problems with guys like CP3.

I like Lin in the "Manu" role, just seems perfect for him. I think he needs the "underdog" role to get motivated. Beverly must still be hurting because he can't hit the side of a barn right now. When they are both clicking, they really help the team.

*(new here... I just couldn't resist watching this debate without adding my opinion... I aim to be as unbiased as possible.)
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is such a disparity between rocket diehards & linfans's perspectives. Obviously, both sides would like to see the Rockets succeed, but it is through very different means.

Lin fans: They are upset with ESPN annoucing the 'replacement, demotion or benching' of Lin. Add onto that, Harden's 4Q-iso-mode and Mchale's erratic management of Lin's minutes since early last season have clearly irritated those who support him, knowing that Lin has an uncanny ability to perform at his best in clutch time. Their wet dream is the Rocket's success with sole credit to Lin.

Rocket diehards: They love the city, the color red and the team. After that, their love then falls onto the players ranked by their production and importance to team success. It's simple nature of any organized sports team. The fact that Linfans keep professing irrational attention for Lin in sacrifice of others is just.... irrational and annoying. Diehards will never understand Linfans, so Linfans really are just wasting time steaming on Clutchfans. I'm pretty sure even Jeremy would get totally annoyed if he was to read these forums. Unrequited sympathy is really nothing to be cheery about.

In all, rocket fans want to see Harden and Howard hoist the trophy more than anything, even if that means getting Mchale fired or Lin/Asik traded or blowing up the roster.

THIS!! Even Harden wasn't as truly content to be a 6th man as OKC liked to say he was.

I didn't say Lin was "bad" on defense.

So far this year Brooks has probably been the better offensive player. But he is definitely a defensive liability. Bev is a much better player overall. In my mind there is no doubt that Brooks should be the third pg, no matter who starts.

This article misses the real reason for Lin being the 6th man.

    It's simple: James Harden.

Sam and Kenny situation has nothing to do with the PG situation today.

Lin is the experienced PG, better PG, proven PG, PG with the potential.

If Harden wasn't on this team or he was not playing then there will be no question Lin would start over Beverly.

I personally don't care who starts but lets speak the truth. Don't compared Coach T's decision to stick with a proven starter vet in Kenny the Jet Smith to what is happening today when the proven vet is benched in favor of the unproven rookie with no experience and much less potential than Lin.

The Knicks are in crisis mode at 2-4 and playing without any direction, they desperately need a change.

As bad as we make them seem, the Rockets are nowhere near that level

I understand what a unit means. If Lin is a scorer and facilitator he should be in the starting line up since that's what helps the 1st UNIT and gets players involved, that's any basketball team. & since harden is more of a scorer he should go back to his most experienced role 6th man like he was in OKC (which was to primarily score) he is still in this role hasn't adjusted just is a starter now.

of course we know that's not going to happen harden is a MVP and will start here in Houston. But I'm just being fair if We want to discuss a UNIT
