I saw C Martin in that tweet and had a heart attack. But he seems like a solid pickup as an outstanding defender, depending on the price.
He's most likely the 3rd catcher on the postseason roster who comes in late as a defensive replacement. Pretty much shuts down the run game.
Great pickup if they didn’t have to give up anything of value. Intl pool money or a grade 35/40 prospect is the hope.
I like Sandoval, but that is exactly the type of guy we should be giving up for a guy to help us win this year. We have a huge amount of depth when it comes to pitchers in his range. I like Sandoval, but I like the deal also
He was valuable to the Astros in that he doesn't have to be 40-man rostered until next season, while a lot of their top prospects need to be added this off-season. I don't particularly like this deal.
Wonder if the FO thinks he's too far off to protect in the R5 draft after next season? Maybe I'm a year ahead. Oh well, hopefully Maldonado has some big plays down the stretch this season. It will be nice to have a catcher who can control the running game.
Pitching depth in the system is incredibly strong so it’s fine l. I liked Sandoval though, has a chance to be a #5 or long reliever.
Perfectly fine with this kind of deal. Sandoval is the kind of guy you give up for this return. A catcher in Maldanado who is one of the best defensive catchers in the game and can get a homer or two every now and then. McCullers liked the deal on Twitter. One of those small moves that works. Him with these studs on the mound... APPROVE.
I would be shocked if that entered into their thinking. I do think it's possible that Houston's FO values left handedness way less than other teams. They seem to be pretty willing to trade them away and they also don't seem to value them that highly in the draft.
But he also throws out 12% more baserunners than McCann and nearly 20% more than Stassi. I know the die-hards have fallen in love with Sandoval, but a fringe prospect for a Gold Glove winning catcher is a fair deal. Obviously Luhnow has become concerned with the catching defense.
Sandoval did a nice job building up his stock this year. Hope he continues to do well as he progresses through the minors. I won't wish him well against the Astros, though.
Sandoval is a little steep but Maldonado is someone that can be very good behind the plate and hit well enough to not be a total black hole. The fact that the Astros made the deal with the Angels tells me what they think the upside for Sandoval is. He can be good, but he has a tiny margin for error.
