The L/R stats are pretty telling too Hitting .284 off LHP with a .824 OPS Hitting .218 off RHP with a .721 OPS
If that was true, they would still be drafting a lot of the ones with potential in order to trade them given that others value them highly, right? Would create a great arbitrage situation in the Astros' minds.
Stassi and this new cat are terrible offensively. I have faith in both of their defensive abilities though. I hope McCann can get back by early sept. so that he’s back to form for the playoffs. McCann is one of the best at calling a game and that is what we need most. Plus, when healthy, mccann hits.
High cost for a guy that may not start 20 games for us, or start a single game in the postseason. When I saw the trade, I figured it was going to be for a nobody or cash. Hate the trade.
McCann doesn't really hit more than Stassi, other than he strikes out less. Maldonado's offense is just plain awful.
"Brian is on his way back. We're fully confident he's going to be back in Sept & have time to get back into playing form prior to the postseason. This is about the desire to carry 3 catchers for the postseason." -- Luhnow If that's the case they're going to have some intriguing roster decisions to make for the postseason.
Terrible offensively? For a catcher Stassi has been far from terrible with the bat. He has been slumping lately though.
Most catchers offensively are worse. I welcome his glove and arm, as that’s the most important aspect you should want of a catcher
Feels like we are selling short on Sandoval. He's been really impressive this season, particularly following his promotion to BC.
So everyone's clear, Maldonado slots right in around Brad Ausmus's career stats as an Astro. That should be the baseline expectation offensively. Hopefully defensively too?
Compared to other mlb catchers, Stassi has been pretty good Now if you want to compare him to Bregman and Altuve he sucks lol
I think a lot of people are basing their reactions to this trade simply on his hitting stats Dude was a gold glove catcher last year and we have the best rotation in baseball, that’s a hell of a combination
He's also leading the league in passed balls this year. He ranks terribly in catch framing this year. Probably just one of those years, since he's generally ranked well in the past, but who knows? In the postseason, who do you think will start at catcher? Do you think they will carry 3 catchers? They did last year, but not really since Gattis was the primary DH in the postseason like he would be now. I can only assume they aren't overly confident McCann is going to return healthy.
This trade makes them better right now, which is what they need to be doing for the stretch run and the playoffs. You don’t make a championship team better without giving up something in return. I’m good with it.
