Took a Germanwings flight to Düsseldorf just a few weeks ago, crazy to see this. You're used to hearing it from Asian Airlines during long flights, but this was only from Barcelona to Düsseldorf and with a modern plane.

There was apparently a thunderstorm, very rare to see planes go down because of lightning. Also heard the crash site can't be reached by vehicles because of the mountains, terrible.

so many high profile accidents in the last 2 years. Maybe it's just me but it seems I've heard about more civilian plane crashes in the last 2 years than I had the last 5 years before that.

    They are saying...

"Weather was calm at the time of the crash and there didnt appear to have been turbulence."

The plane descended from an altitude of about 37k feet to 7k feet in about 10 minutes. Crash site was found at an altitude of 6500ft Pilot relayed a distress signal before the plane started to descend.

Man, heart goes out to all of the victims, there are very few things more terrifying to me than going down in a plane crash.

    Thoughts to the families.

I'm not that familiar with Germanwings airline. Is this a type of low cost airline like Southwest, Ryanair, etc..?

Low-cost wing of Lufthansa, but A320 is the most-used middle distance planes worldwide and regarded as pretty reliable.

Not too modern, unfortunately. 24 years old. German media talks about technical difficulties, the plane seems to have been on the landing field yesterday for a couple a hours because of that.

They resolved the difficulties and it was about one door for the tires not opening, so it doesn't seem to be related to this crash.

They can't say yet. It'll take days to find all the parts of the plane, since it crashed in the french alps.

They're saying the flight crew actually said nothing at all, and that it was French air traffic control that declared the emergency after observing the rapid descent with no radio contact.

I'm willing to bet low-level weather had something to do with this with clouds possibly obscuring the mountainous terrain. It still doesn't explain why the aircraft descended in the first place or why no radio transmissions were made, but that's the nature of these things. It's usually one problem that leads to another.

In any event, thoughts and prayers to those involved and affected. Very tragic.
