Sounds like sudden and rapid loss of cabin pressure with a bunch of people blacking out, including maybe the pilots (?)

This is not based on anything I read and is just speculation from no mayday signal and a rapid descent.

What I've been hearing is that it while rapid the descent appeared controlled. The question is whether the pilot did this or the software did.

I fly Germanwings all the time, and I have been on that route before. This is a big tragedy and hits very close to home.

If that NYT article is correct, then I only see two options:

    1) The one pilot who was alone became incapacitated and could not open the door. If I am not completely mistaken, protocol would have required that when one pilot leaves, a flight attendant should be with the other pilot in the cockpit. If that report is correct, that did not happen here.

    2) The one pilot who was alone was suicidal or acted intentionally for some other reason.

I find it curious that we do not know the identity of the pilots yet. When that Malaysian crash happened, that was known early on and was a big topic.

I hate to say it but it sounds like whomever was flying this aircraft intentionally crashed it.

Very interested to hear what the flight data recorder uncovers (as well as background checks into the pilot and first officer). But this all sounds highly unusual.

I'm leaning more towards he is incapacitated. If he wanted to crash the plane he would have nose dived it, like that Egyptian plane. But instead it was a gradual descent.

Man, if he became incapacitated at the same time the other pilot locked himself out without following the protocol ATW mentions, Germanwings might get sued out of existence.

It's possible, I suppose. I just have a hard time envisioning a scenario in which this theory adds up.

So the pilot or co-pilot disengages the autopilot, becomes incapacitated by some means that affected him (and only him) all while the other member of the flight crew just so happened to be outside of the cockpit?

It's USA protocol. Not an international one.

BTW, how do you confirm from the sound recording that it was pilot that was locked out?

What if both pilots were incapacitated and crew member or passenger outside the cockpit was trying to knock and find out why they were descending so fast?

Found the answer to my question:

"A source close to the investigation told AFP that cockpit recordings recovered from the crash site indicated one of the seats in the cockpit was pushed back and the door opened and closed."

are we to believe these news agencies don't know this pilot's name?

So I guess the next question is was he just a crazy person, suicidal or was this a deliberate act of terrorism that was directed by some larger terrorist group.

The name of the co-pilot was Andreas Lubitz, and he was 28 years old.

10 minutes! This has to be absolutely terrifying. Not sure which is worst. The 10 minute descent here where you see the pilot smashing the cockpit door to stop the co-pilot or the Malaysia airline where you fly for 12 hours, assuming you're still awake, hoping the plane is being ransomed. Awful.

Man, that is crazy. What sort of mental state are you in where you put yourself into a 10-minute suicidal dive?
