Add to that "and whose team is willing to trade him this early before the trade deadline."

I can already hear the criticisms on February 25:

"What??? [Team X] traded [Player Y] in a salary dump??? Why didn't Morey use the Yao DPE on that guy when he had the chance???"

The answer is probably that Player Y was not available in such a salary dump trade on January 31.

(I honestly feel bad for Morey. He's going to get KILLED by many fans who simply have no idea how trades work in the NBA or the actual behind-the-scenes dealing that goes on.)

Agreed, Bima. Although, to clarify I was referring to the DPE and not the TPE in this instance (typo). It's still basically the same point though and you're absolutely right.

Sure, there are 'January 31st trades' available. It's unfortunate that some fans can't think far ahead enough to see how taking on a Harrington/Birdman/Maxiell/Amir Johnson type (or any other 4/5 that makes $5.765M or less) barely makes us any better and have NASTY long-term contracts that do us little good, all things considered. I mean, it isn't like Chris Wallace is gonna call up before Monday and say, "Hey, we'll give ya Thabeet for that DPE that's about to expire".

You would think you do a good job here to educate but... yeah, no. Obviously people are going to debate just for the sake of debating on half the topics in the forum.

Luckily all the fans can hate on Morey all they want. Les is a business man and he understanda what Morey can and can't do and you know he respects the guy. Morey is doing everything he can, he's a great GM. He just is not the best situation right now.

Makes one wonder had Morey known there would be such a short shelf life on the DPE would he have waited longer to apply for it pushing its expiration closer to the trade deadline.

One thing for certain , the Rockets have a lot of tools in the shed for trade purposes. I know we all expected a deadline deal last season and nothing materialized. Just cant see that being an option this time as many of those "assets" are set to expire at seasons end.

    Yao's insured contract
    Battier
    Jeffries
    Hayes
    Brooks (RFA)
The Ariza TPE (August 11th 2011)

Seems to me like the Rockets are in a use it or lose it situation.

The expiration date of the DPE is based on the date on which the injury was discovered, per the CBA.

The Rockets knew at the time they applied for the DPE that it would expire on or before January 31.

Wasnt aware of that .... answers my question. So many details involved in any trade in the NBA its a wonder that any deals see a conclusion.

Monday is the Dead line to use Yao Exception !

I saw that we have till the 31st to use Yao injury exception. Do you guys think Morey will use it or let it go? Also what do you think we will get?

well they applied for it, but that doesn't mean they planned on using it.

they got it just for the option of using it. i think if les is going to add salary to this roster he has to be convinced that its a worthwhile investment.

i don't think the team proved that they can make the playoffs if they just added one mid level player. so i don't think les is willing to spend right now.

I don't see the point of asking for it and not using it. I fully expect them to put it to use and will be surprised if it is not.

You ask for it so that if a deal comes along you can use it. The Rockets really aren't in a position to take on salary right now unless it's a superstar, and I don't think there are any superstars available.

You never know, bro. Morey always surprises us with trades out of nowhere. He is known for getting the most out of the least (player exception).

lets do a trade to create a roster spot and go sign Sean William formerly of the Nets he seems to have figured out being a r****d doesnt help your Pro Career. Current stats at Dleague 15 pts 3.3 blocks 9.9 rebounds sounds like numbers we could use!!!

Don't you ever thought there was a possibility that Morey could make a trade beforehand to get the Rockets some cap space and then take on a player with the exception?

Doesn't look as if they will get to use the DPE with tomorrow being the expiration date. Shame. I was hoping something would come of it. Of course, i'll be watching to see if some last minute deal will get done.
