If Denver truly wanted to "dump" JR Smith at all costs (rather than trying to actually extract VALUE from another team), then I wonder if David Kahn in Minnesota would be willing to take a flyer on Smith and simply trade a conditional second rounder for him, using the Wolves' cap space to eat Smith's salary entirely. If he doesn't work out, it's not like the Wolves will lose out on a playoff spot, and they can simply let him walk at the end of the season. But if he has a great year, they have his Bird rights to re-sign him after next year. Plus, in the wake of the Michael Beasley trade, it just strikes me as a move that Kahn would be willing to make. But I think Denver actually wants SOMETHING in return for JR. So I don't think he'll just be a "throw-in" that a team like the Rockets would HAVE to take in order to get Carmelo.
