Morey or another Rockets official has to have proof that Rubio, if traded to us, wants to play for us. Whenever Rubio gets out of his contract (2 years, I think was the length), and if he DOESN'T want to play with us, then any deal we've made with the Wolves is a bad deal.
I completely forgot about the possibility of Rubio being had in a deal with Minnie. I have seen this kid play dozens of times. He's not as tall as Magic, but he is a magician. He's one of those basketball talents that comes only once in a generation. If you can get him, you get him.
Very simple: if we had several smaller expiring contracts, when it's time to decide if we want to keep any of them, we can. Also, this gives us flexibility. Say one of them is good enough to keep. We can keep that guy, or, if there's something we want to do with the cap space, we can renounce him. Another thing to consider: maybe we can get under the cap and get a certain guy for, say, $7 million (people throw that number around). We can just stay above the cap, and use the MLE. Unless we figure out a way to get a specific FA that we really want, staying over the cap and using the MLE is worth more to us than getting under, and using cap space.
McGrady was a decent "point" guard, actually. And it looked bad because a SG was the floor leader, not a PG. However, I'd be all for Rubio commanding the floor, seeing as how Brooks is a SG in a PG's body.
As for the logic in what Kahn is saying, he clearly isn't interested in using McGrady to get under the cap. Most of the time, it isn't worth while to get under, unless you have a bunch of duds, because as you lower your team salary, you are also lowering your aggregate team talent level. I understand Bima to say that letting Tracy go doesn't put us under the cap, unless we also renounce some FAs. Minnesota might be in that same position.
Rubio + Brooks is better than Lowry + Brooks..... And Rubio and Brooks can switch defensive assignments....where Brooks is a penetrating SG, and Rubio the pure PG.... It would be pure poetry. DD
Based on the negotiating prowess we've seen on display in his first few months on the job, that franchise has got to be the worst in the league in terms of relationships established with other teams. Perhaps some GM's don't even return calls to him anymore because he's such a tightwad. Kahn might find himself on an island soon if he keeps his miserly ways up. He already renegged with NO in taking on Devin Brown's contract just bc he was upset that word of it leaked out prematurely.

All Spanoulis needs is the right combination of coach, system, and set of players to accomodate a 20% shooting 10 turnover hybrid guard who can't defend. It's got to be out there somewhere.

DD, if the rockets have any shot at getting Rubio from the T-Wolves, Brooks would have to be part of that deal. Some of these GMs are alittle smarter than some of us fans think we are. Rubio is an incredible talent. The rockets will have to give to get in aquiring a special player like Rubio.
Only thing is the height. If Brooks were to be guarded by the taller players, as he would normally, if he played the 2 spot, guys like Kobe, Artest, Prince could all switch their assignments to him, and eat him alive. After all, I assume our 3 spot is either Ariza or Battier. Neither of whom I would be scared of to take a slightly contested three.
