We actually need to win by 3 goals and Brazil must win or draw against Italy. Our GD is currently -5, and Egypt's is 0. I three goal win by the US would put us at -2 and them at -3, allowing us to advance if Brazil gets a result. Not that it matters, it's not gonna happen.
Forgot about Italy being on 3 points as well. So a 3 goal victory and a 4 goal Brazil victory then. Again, it's not gonna happen.
See that's what I thought, too. I seem to remember, though, that the only GD that matters in a three way tie is the GD between the three teams. Which would mean that Italy is set at +1 because they are done with the games between the three "tied" teams. Thus, we'd have to win by 6 to tie them on GD. I think I have all of that right.
Agree with you on Bradley, he is a very genial guy and a hard worker who does get a lot of flack cos his dad is the gaffer but imho there was a bit of a double standard going on early in his nats career while he was trying to find his way into the Heerenveen team. Nonetheless, he has to be a lock on the team for next year and I see nothing wrong in his game. He just needs a natural Dmid like Jones to play alongside him. I love Jay Demerit's grit but he is a backup on this team, pure and simple. Not that there's a glut of excellent CB's but Bocanegra and Onyewu are a better partnership. Heath Pierce and Bornstein do a passable job at LB. Bradley got the starting lineup v Italy right but the issue was his substitutions. Same thing today.
I think we mostly agree about his skill set. But that raises the question, is it better to have a player that may or may not be better than the other options in a bad situation, or is it better to have two players that may not be quite as good but work better together? The fact that Bob refuses to try combinations that don't involve his son is what causes people to bring up nepotism.
i guess its the nepotism that makes me so critical of bradleys game. yes he deserves playing time but at this point id like to see what else the US has.
This isn't really related to the Confederations Cup but it seems too early to start a Gold Cup thread, but here is the preliminary USA roster for the Gold Cup. We should get to see some new blood. Jozy, Feilhaber, DeMerrit, and Casey are the only players that have gotten time in the Confederations Cup so far to make the roster. http://www.concacaf.com/competitions/goldcup/2009/rosterDetail.aspx?id=10 From the Dynamo Clark and Holden were called up for the USA and Hainault is on the Canada roster.
DrLudicrous, and for anyone else interested, there will be 100+ football games in 52 days in the U.S.A., including Real Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Mexico's Chivas and América touring, the Gold Cup, the InterLiga, etc. for a fun-filled soccer fest in this country. Houston will host a few. I hear that new stadium a few hundred miles north of Houston will host a few of those.
Most big clubs have friendlies in the US during the summer. The only big game coming to Houston is the Gold Cup doubleheader on July 8th. I don't remember the teams involved off the top of my head other than Mexico.
I heard it on the news, but can't link you to the specific place, stipendlax. I know Chelsea will play C. D. América in that new stadium in North Texas. SuperLiga starts today. Enjoy. What are your predictions for tomorrow's game, gentlemen?
That's a giant accomplishment for a country that has had a domestic league for almost 50 years and a football federation for over 80 years? And not to mention the dominant sport of that country for God knows how long. Hat's off to Mexico. I just got one question, how much longer before Mexico wins the WC? Because this guy sounds content with Mexico making it out of the preliminary rounds and then crashing backing to earth. Bravo Mexico, bravo. You're a beacon of mediocrity that the United States can only hope to aspire to one day.
The starting lineups are out and Bobbo goes with the tried and "trusted" again. Landon and Clint on the wings, starts for Charlie Davies and Jozy. Hopefully we'll see Freddy and Jose Torres sometime in this match but hey, it's Bob Bradley.
