I didn't say he was a problem and I certainly wasn't implying it. I'm a Sengun fan. But the reality is, the org wants to start KPJ, and they want him to develop as a "I have the ball in my hands all the time" guy AKA point guard. Call the position whatever you want. That being said, if KPJ is going to be a starter and he's going to play that role, that's likely to limit Sengun if they want to try him out in a point center role. So if we accept that KPJ is going to start in that role, and we want to give Sengun a try-out at point center, it makes sense to play him off the bench. As many wise basketball analysts pointed out when Chris Paul came to the rockets - "there is only one ball." But seriously, only one player can dominate the ball, so in the interest of seeing what our different players have to offer, this could benefit Sengun. Just to give an example outcome for what I'm talking about, let's just say, hypothetically, that KPJ does not improve at all. He averages 16/4/6 on 54% TS with 3.5 TOV per game. KPJ plans please don't jump on me here, this is purely a hypothetical. Meanwhile, Sengun is playing 32mpg playing with the backups, he's got the ball on every possession and is orchestrating the offense with post ups mixed in, and he's averagine 17/7/7 on 60% TS. In this hypothetical, the rockets actually got a chance to see Sengun play the way that you want to see him play! If he played with the starters, he would mostly be a screener and a roll man, who maybe got a couple post ups sprinkled in if the situation called for it. But here, he really got to run the show, and got a chance to shine and show off. So I don't really see it as a waste, or as another year of suffering.
I don’t care if Alp starts or is the 6th man. As long as he gets 28-32 min and it’s best for the team it’s smart. Jabari, Green and Alp should get a lot of run together. Their games match better than anyones else
As I sent you a message in summer for Euro tv schedule, I knew that you value Alpi high..It was a kind of friendly explanation, not a direct answer. I am always happy to read your well-wriiten comments.Respect.
I agree. Sengun and Jabari looked good together. They compliment each other and Sengun will open up Jabari’s game because he is so unselfish and always looking to pass first. I remember at the beginning people were crying about Jabari not getting the ball. So if the Rockets want to make the offense guard iso heavy, the same situation will occur with regards to Jabari unless they emphasize more ball movement and hitting the open man.
The same situation will not occur with Smith because he can shoot from anywhere on the floor. Sengun can only score at the moment from right under the rim, and he is not a lob threat. So in order for him to receive the ball in a PnR is for Green or KPJ to hit him with a low pass through defenders which is a really difficult. It's much easier to do Picks and pops with Smith
Very interesting, that the opinion about the player taking a negative way. He is a young player and he learned a lot of things since last year. Guys who not see this are blind or they are trolling. He isnt a Top Tier Center at the moment but the Rockets arent a Top Tier Team at the moment! So let this young team play and take together the next Level! He got new skills in his pocket and you will see how Alperen Sengün take also the next Level.
Fine, I’m a kid to you lol. The frustrating part is that I know you’re smart when it comes to this stuff, which is why I can’t believe you’re saying some of these things. Idk if you truly feel this way or not bc these takes are outrageous. We just don’t agree at all. Sengun is very talented, but he’s not what teams need. We do need to develop him and see his what his ceiling is, but I don’t think is anywhere near jokic or Sabonis
Your premise that they want KPJ to dominate the ball is flawed. Silas is on record saying he wants the initiator role to be shared. There is evidence in the preseason that this is the case with KPJ already playing off the ball more and green initiating the offense. I suspect Sengun will also start to get more opportunities both at the top of the key and the post as more of the offense is rolled out
I don't even care if he comes off the bench just give the man his touches. He is simply too ****ing gifted of a passer to not get touches.
Whilst that may be true, he's also by far the person who's furthest away from reaching his ceiling, and the player who's closest to his floor. I'd LOVE for Sengun to develop to be a star for us, but right now he isn't that. Treating him like he is this early is premature, and sculpting the team around his play when everybody else's fits together more naturally, is idiotic.
Can’t believe y’all are complaining when they put up 81 first half points last preseason game. We did that be letting our athletes run! Y’all want us to just slow down just to please one player?!? He will get his touches when the game dictates that! He needs to learn how to impact the game in other ways, like him going 2-2 from 3! That’s what he’s gonna have to do at times to fit
My take is also co-signed by a lot of people who do this for a living. If anything your take is the outrageous one. Because he’s not an elite athlete, he’s a scrub to you. That’s weird take, specially in todays NBA
He’s a 3 pt shot, ball security and strength added away from being really close. That may be a lot, but he’s still one of the youngest players in the league. Everyone else’s doesn’t “fit”. It fits this system, which is guard oriented and not much passing. That system doesn’t work unless you have Harden and Luka, and it still doesn’t work when it’s needed the most.
What makes you say that? He has already been far more efficient than e.g. KPJ on both ends of the floor.
Same kind of people who would have picked Stromile Swift over Tim Duncan. Because, you know, he could jump higher.
This is a fair take, he was also a part of scoring 81. And it’s not his job to fit completely, it’s the coaching staffs job to make strengths fit together. This team isn’t going to win by running only, specially in the playoffs. It might make the plebs happy to see dunks and fast breaks but that isn’t winning games
No I don’t think he’s a scrub for that, I don’t think he’s a scrub at all. It’s his archetype! They’re tough to fit in today’s game. That’s why a lot of them have been played out the league. It’s a tough fit
That’s true.. there were moments last game where I thought it was best to dump it down to him bc things got clogged, but we had dumb JC on the court that tried a cross court pass. I feel like he didn’t work on his game outside of his strengths. He’ll get better for sure, but I have my concerns
