They aren't brainwashed. They just heard and watched the things that Rush said about their community. How about you have empathy for those who don't like Rush because they have had bigoted insults hurled at them because of people like Rush spreading their filth for the past 30 years. I also have a feeling that Rush probably isn't loved much by his children. He doesn't seem like the good father type. Edit: seems like he never had children. Thank goodness.
People can say what they want about him, but I have to admit that he is the best ever at what he does. He is an absolute master. I every once in awhile will listen to him just to appreciate how skilled he is at his craft. The gulf between Limbaugh and someone like Hannity or Tucker or Mahr is massive. He doesn’t seem like a very good person and doesn’t come across as very compassionate. However I have no ill will for him and I appreciate that he is a true master.
Probably things very similar to what I have heard some other white men say in public. It isn’t the majority, and it is less common now than even ten years ago.... but it isn’t THAT uncommon. As a very large white man I am a magnet for other white men to say some of the most racist, sexist and appalling things imaginable... Rush is no different.
I'm pretty much on the same page. He is as good at what he does (addicting and entertaining and influencing listeners) as anyone I've ever seen in my years. I too have listened to him from time to time, and I don't even get mad. I just appreciate his craft and his focus. But where I differ is that, while I don't wish him misery or death at all, I do bear him ill will. I think he's really helped divide people from having normal political conversations in the country, even dividing families in many cases. I remember when our massive family reunions changed for the worse, and it was because dittoheads started walking around trying to pick fights with anyone who'd gone to college. He's just a huge force for division and magical thinking. He started this monumental effort to complain about the referees so much that a huge swath of the country is ready to disregard most of the fact-based information ecosystem. That's great harm. On the other hand, my other pet theory is that, if not for people like Limbaugh, there would have been plenty of others. Once the Soviet Union fell, this country was ripe and ready to then take up internal divisions and team-based fights. Maybe Limbaugh just fit right into that, timing wise, and made a mint for his trouble.
What I remember about the guy is that he was often funny during the Gulf War. You know, the war that occurred because a dictator invaded a sovereign country and threatened the world’s supply of oil, so a huge coalition got together and kicked the dictator’s ass. That Gulf War. Rush was amusing, even funny during it. While I ardently disagreed with his politics, if he was on while I was driving, I’d listen to his show. Not the Gulf War that President George W. Bush started in an act of madness while lying to the world about the reasons. A war that destabilized the entire region, as well as killing and maiming untold numbers of civilians in Iraq, which is still an unholy mess because of that completely unnecessary war. A war that had an enormous negative impact on a whole host of things affecting our country, something we are still dealing with. A war Limbaugh lied about and promoted. Rush wasn’t funny in the years after the original Gulf War and I rarely listened to his show, usually listening a little in the car just to get a sense of what he was saying that was hurting our country’s civil discourse, because he influenced easily influenced Americans. Finally quit doing even that because he just got worse. Yes, Rush spewed hate and lies in massive quantities. Still does. Having said all that, I don’t wish cancer on anyone. Even him. I’ve watched people I love, people I care deeply about die because of it. Spend a long time fighting it and lose. I’ll be glad that he isn’t on the radio telling his lies, pumping out his bigotry. I won’t be glad that he’s going out this way.
Limbaugh, Gingrich, and the intense hatred for all things Clinton is where our democracy started the rapid decline.
