I actually had this exact thought about you, but it wasn't until after I hit the submit button (no edit function for me). Honestly, I could see myself doing exactly what you're doing with playing older games, but I am just too strapped for time nowadays (and I don't see that getting much better in the foreseeable future) and would prefer to play the few games that I really, really enjoy. And more importantly, 90%+ of my time is spent solely with NCAA Football and I was becoming jaded with the current gen version since it has hit a ceiling and isn't improving anymore, so at the price I got it just made sense for me to upgrade now. I'm more pumped for that game than I have been in years and I doubt another game even goes into my PS3 for the next 6 months after picking it up.

When/if I have more time to waste, I'd like to go back and play through some of the older games that I've missed - there are a few on my list that I'd like to at least give a shot, probably by buying them used. Have you used the PS1/PS2 "smoothing" feature on the PS3 at all? If so, how is it?

    Gonna disagree with you there.

If I HAD to pick ONE, I'd take the PS3 (of course, I didn't pick one, I have both). But since I don't even have cable at the moment (just plain don't care about TV in the NBA offseason), I consider my PS3 more essential than my HDTV.

But yeah, I don't see why anyone would have to choose in the first place. Finance the b****! It's not hard to get a good deal on a lower-end HDTV, which is still way better than a high-end SDTV.

Holy crap! I'm so glad that I just learned about this game. It looks AWESOME. I was a huge Star Wars fan when I was younger, but I've always been pretty disappointed by their videogames. A great Star Wars game could really be amazing, but it seems like very few developers have gotten it right.

I just watched some videos of this game and consider me sold! It actually looks like they are putting some effort into this game instead of just relying on the Star Wars name to sell copies.

The digital molecular matter engine as well as the physics and euphoria engines look like they are going to seamlessly come together in a ground-breaking way! It looks like you can literally wreak havoc on your enemies and the environment in a totally dynamic way (i.e. you throw some crates and stormtroopers into a column, the column cracks then breaks under its own weight, thus causing the surrounding structure to collapse in a totally unscripted way).

Tech video showing off some of DMM, the Euphoria system, and Havoc physics engine:

    Purely my own observations here...

Seems to me that with PS1 games, the PS2 almost did a better job smoothing them out (on standard def. TVs), and it also did a better job decreasing load times on some games (X-Com comes to mind).

The PS2 game smoothing is nice. However, if you have a standard-def TV, you probably won't notice the difference unless you're literally comparing side-by-side.

PS3 and 20inch zenith CRT doesn't sound right.

yeah, financing is good, also establishes some credit. 2 years no interest on a $1000 TV is about $45/month

Does anyone have any personal opinion on this game?

Is it similar to KOTOR in any way?

Might have to go get this on the cheap at lunch if it's persuading..

Thanks Tinman for the heads up.

    its received the highest reviews

    IGN:
IGN Ratings for Mass Effect (X360)
    Rating Description
    out of 10
    9.5 Presentation
A new high mark for storytelling in games. Gameplay can be confusing at first due to a lack of good tutorials.
    9.0 Graphics
One of the most artistically and technically beautiful games of all time. Unfortunately, the engine can't keep up and slowdown is rampant.
    10 Sound
An unprecedented amount of top-notch voice work.
    9.0 Gameplay
The RPG elements are outstanding. Glitches, poor AI, and weak squad mechanics weigh the game down.
    9.5 Lasting Appeal
Sure to be a classic RPG that is talked about (and played) for years.
    9.4
    Outstanding OVERALL

its on the cheap now since its old: $39.99 new, $34.99 used at gamestop/ebgames

I guess my more specific question would be how you think the smoothing looks on an HDTV combined with upscaling?

Also, off-topic question: Do you just cancel and then resubscribe to cable when NBA season rolls around? I've been thinking of doing something similar to that since I rarely watch TV outside of football season. Do they give you any grief? How much money do you actually save?

Mass Effect is hella fun. It's got some buggy texture issues, but it's really enjoyable and I've played through it several times to experience all of the conversation choices and find just about everything.

It's pretty much exactly KOTOR but without the SW universe. In fact, it's nice because you get a clean slate to work with. While I don't like it more than the original KOTOR...(It's close, but I mean, come on, who saw that twist coming?!) it's light years better than KOTOR 2.

If you have your internet with the said cable company too, you'll not really save all that much since the combined discount ot TV and Internet will be gone.

    Although it is enticing.

To be honest - i liked KOTOR2 more than the first, although i think a large reason is because i played it before the original. I had to frantically search the shops everywhere to see if any of them had it anymore.
But KOTOR was very enjoyable aswell - the one definate standout over 2 was with the lightsaber did more damage in fights.

But yes - the twist was great!! i was there going are you kidding me.

I think i'm going to head out at lunchtime and pick this game up - hopefully it will occupy my time until Force Unleashed gets released.

(am i the biggest idiot... I saved the start of my new game of MGS over the ending of the previous game... so i can't get my items from Otacon)

That's kinda what I was thinking. Right now I have a package comcast cable and internet. My roommate takes care of all that stuff, but I was thinking of just not getting cable after I move out. However, I'd imagine anywhere I go in Florida I'll have to get cable and internet through the same provider, and I don't know if I can live without cable during football season.

And yeah, I just spent a half hour or so checking out the Force Unleashed website. Looks awesome. You can tell the developers really cared about this project.

So about a week ago, my 360 got the red rings...I shipped it in yesterday to get it repaired. In the meantime, I went ahead and bought a PS3 tonight. Since most of my friends have a 360, Im going to continue buying multiplayer games for it. With the PS3, I will mostly buy exclusives and games that are more built around single player. With that said, I need some "must buys". Suggestions? Thanks.

btw, I already ordered Little Big Planet.

I was thinking of getting PS3, but all my friends have the 360, so that's the way to go.

    Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
    Condemned 2: Bloodshot
    Assassin's Creed
    Skate

Those are the single-player-oriented PS3 titles that leap to mind as ones you'd want to pick up. Naturally I love my Burnout Paaradise and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, but if you had any interest in those I assume you have them for the 360 already. (If you don't, shame on you!)

If you want PS2 recommendations, definitely check these posts. I took a lot of time putting those together. :)

    Enjoy!
