My mother grew up in Newport, and her family still lives there. When I was a kid, I'd visit the relatives in the summer (and for Christmas, usually). Made quite a few trips to the Indian Mall since that was the most exciting thing there (if it was an extra special occassion, we'd go to the McCain Mall in Little Rock). I ended up spending a lot of my childhood in Newport (and Jonesboro).

My mother lives in Arkadelphia now, so we usually have the relatives all meet up there, making my trip shorter but not all that much more interesting.

Yeah but be honest, does this whole place just yell "THIS SUCKS ASS!!!" or is it just me. I hate Arkansas (maybe just my part) and yes Jonesboro is the center for Northeast Arkansas in that people come from places all over here like Newport, Wynne, Blytheville, Osceola, Paragould, etc. just to shop and eat and visit but it really sucks because it's in a dry county. We don't have any good places to eat here. Chili's, Red Lobster, Applebee's, Olive Garden, and a host of other major restaurants have declined to open up alcohol-free facilities here. I mean the people in this damn town get excited about another McDonald's opening up and will crowd to get in it and yes we just had a new one open and people treat it like they serve Angus beef burgers there or something.

My parents were supposed to fly out of Newark the morning of 9/11. When the flights were grounded, they were stuck at an Airport hotel for the remainder of the week.

Never heard my father's voice sound so stressed. They were ready to get home. (I offered to drive from California to bring them home to Houston, but they refused)

The cost of living is ridiculously high in ABQ...I is definitely more expensive than Dallas and Houston, but I still don't understand why...Found some good mexican food, although nothing compares to tex-mex...

The freakin' food and gas was so much more expensive and car insurance, forget about it...Nothing but dirt and rocks...

Although I do miss the weather (no humidity)...

No, Marshall is in the northwest/north central part of the state. I've never been past Mountain Home. I would never go to Harrison.

    We cool.

I just felt the urge to cleanse my aura.... err, something. ;)

btw- I would post a picture of the Aldine Mail Route area of Houston, but I couldn't find one. That would be my vote for armpit of Houston. We were burglarized twice there in 6 months, to the tune of some $5000+... gun fights every night, drug deals in church parking lots (1988)... I hope it's better.

Why would people go to Jonesboro when they could just go to Memphis? Especially those people that live on the interstate like in Wynne? But I would agree that pretty much anywhere in Arkansas sucks. The Fayetteville area is decent enough, though.

I nominate Conway, Arkansas as one of the worst places to go to college!

My impression is that Arkansas, except for a few isolated pockets like Little Rock and Hot Springs, is a wasteland populated by some serious rednecks. :) (strangely enough, I've never actually been to Jonesboro itself, so I can't comment on that one) Of course, many of my experiences in that state involve the highways and endless construction.

My husband enjoyed living in Albuquerque, though I don't think he met any women the entire time. Don't even think he had any dates the whole time. Otherwise he might not have come back to Houston, just in time for me to move there and turn 18, and I would have never met him. :) So maybe that dating scene's not so good. Nice Mexican food and nearby hiking in the mountains. Don't know if I'd want to live there, though. Too far from everything else. Makes for a fun and affordable vacation if you live in TX.

All this talk about Albuquerque, now I'm gonna have to play the Weird Al song.

By the way, does the air smell like warm root beer? And will people on the street gladly shave your back for a nickel?

    :D

Don't know about the nickel, or the shave. But the air does smell that way. Especially when everyone is burning pinion wood in the fireplace and drying red chiles on the porch.

I can see his point anyway. ;)
