I'm proud of her for letting her teammate complete if she felt she couldn't. Screw the "big no nos." Her mental and physical health come first. Spoiler The Team still won Silver without her so not such a bad spot after all. Right where they were going into today. [\Spoiler]
This team winning silver is worse than American basketball winning silver. The US b team can win gold in gymnastics. Although I will say it was a weaker field this year. Her getting rattled and quitting is something you don’t do. Yes she put herself above her teammates, sometimes you have to. But she wasn’t hurt, she was rattled. It happens all the time in every meet. You push through it, specially in team finals.
No one really knows what's going on in another persons head. If she's not there 100% and bombs people would call her selfish for not stepping aside for someone who was ready to go. Its a no win situation. Ronaldo in WC 98 was not right mentally and physically and still played the final. He was a walking zombie and his team lost 3-0. Maybe brazil performs better with a striker that didnt have a seizure the day prior to the final. Athletes aren't robots.
It still puts her among the greatest. I think this still comes down to if she can actually compete or not. If she and her coach feel she can’t then she’s a liability and stepping aside is the right thing to do.
She absolutely is the greatest talent women’s gymnastics has seen. And I can tell you with 100% confidence, her coach wanted her to compete.
100% confidence? come on, man.. I just watched this vault, she almost killed herself because she got the yips fighting through mental stuff when you're 20 feet in the air? I don't know about that.
I’m sure a lot of people wanted her to compete. On NBC they were acting like it was the end of the World. If she can’t do it though and stinks it up even further thats going to be worse. In the team competition it comes down to if the team can win. A 100% Biles is better than any replacement if she’s not 100% we don’t know.
oh okay. so give us more insight! you think a coach is going to make an athlete fight through mental instability? I think it's different with injury when your mentals are still there. Biles looks like she got the yips. The yips in free fall is not good IMO.
Yeah man, she did it in warm up too. It’s very common in gymnastics. You have to push through it. Specially at that level. She does have to do what she has to do, but……. She’s a vet, a pro, she has to step up in that situation.
Honestly man, biggest part of coaching at that level is instilling confidence when they’re shook. The technique and coaching is already done, you’re basically a spotter and therapist.
And to answer your question, no, a coach won’t force her to do anything. That’s the worst thing a coach can do. I can tell you that her “mess up” on vault is common and probably happens 80% of the time in the gym for any elite gymnast.
For anyone here who’s been an athlete and or a coach a lot of times the problem is trying to keep an athlete who may be hurt and not a 100% from competing. The famous Willis Reid incident limping out back to the court was him wanting to play and willing himself. In this case given how mental focus is so critical lack of focus and will to play could be devastating.
You are absolutely correct for most sports. This is the nature of gymnastics. It’s all pressure and spot light. 1 minute of routine on each event to try and be perfect. She’s handled it fine for 10 years, this was her first taste of adversity in the big stage. She gave up instead of fighting through.
What's weak is that she has to play by a different set of rules than the rest They literally said they down play her moves because they don't want others to get hurt trying them That is weak Rocket River
Some people are way over the top acting like she committed a war crime, but she can't do what she did and claim to be the GOAT. GOATs are held to the highest standard.
One of if not the best gymnast in history dropped out of the Olympics because of the pressure and anxiety. Her routines (I believe they are at least) are the hardest and most technical by a decent margin. She had a concern about screwing up and not wanting to get paralyzed. Fat asses all across America spewing their opinions on the subject.
Easy for you to say. You live on planet normal. She's had enormous pressure for years and I'm just surprised it took this long for something to snap. "She wasn't hurt, she was rattled"? GTFO of here with that S.
