An interview of Yao Ming right after his practice at the Shanghai Sharks' Meilong Training Centre. Let me summarize it for you guys:-

After arriving Shanghai evening of June 21, he trained for 1.5 hour at the Shanghai Sharks' training centre on June 22. Yesterday, it was another 3 hours training under the guidance of David Macha.

Yao Ming had gained weight; he said he dared not weigh, but he thought he is now close to 150KG. He had put on more than 6 ~ 8 KG. He said it is time for him to trim down again.

Right after his April 14 surgery, he had been in his recuperation training. He had not stopped on bicycling, weight-lifting and upper limbs/abdominal exercise. He just resumed some fundamental training (shooting and footworks) last week.

He said the training was very light, not even upto 1/2 of what he used to go through. He thought by the time he rejoins the national team in Beijing, he will then step up the load and intensity of the training.

He can run slowly now. But he still walks with some unease. He said it was all due to the screw in his feet; he has yet to get adapted to it becoming part of his body.

He thought the probability for him to play in the World Championship is becoming bigger and bigger. He will try his best for the comeback. He thought with him or without him, it will be very tough for the China team. He said it will be even tougher than the Olympics because there are too many strong teams in the World Championship. But once on court, he vowed to give his best for his country, and will never give up. He thought if China needs to be among the basketball powerhouses, they need to play with the strong teams, and not the weak teams.

Chinese Basketball Association had set the target for the World Championship: Final 8. When asked about his target, Yao Ming said: "My target is also the Final 8. We have to be practical and not to be boastful." He said he still kept the video tape of the last World Championship, and when he reviewed those tapes, he found it funny about his own play and expression on-court. He thought even though it will be very tough to squeeze into the Final 8, he had confidence to do so.

When asked about the official document released by CBA for all basketballers to learn from Yao Ming's professionalism, he felt embarrassed. He said he also learnt from his seniors (players like Liu Yudong, Hu Weidong, Ju Xiaobin and Zheng Wu), and he hoped he can pass on that spirit to the younger generation.

He used to be the centre of attraction in the past few years upon his return to China. But this year, it was all about the World Cup. He said he never mind and was happy to be out of the limelight. He said: "I know very little about soccer. If you ask me which African team I know, I will ask you which African dance you know. As I kept reiterated soccer is just something that I'll watch if I have ample of time but nothing to do. Oh, I don't mean to play down soccer."

I hope he can get back to 100% with that screw on his foot. Its sounds like he is not too comfortable with it, hopefully he can adjust and play at peak level with it in there.

The really cool thing is that according to the article above, it wasn't even half the level that Yao normally goes through. Damn.

It's a pretty good read, even if I think they downplay what Yao's got going for him, and run the slant a bit towards an inferiority complex. But you can't really argue with their main point that Yao's got a tremendous work ethic that's helped him thrive in the sport.

Actually what rfila has translated was only Section 1 and Section 2 of that official document that CBA issued.

It was a very long document composite of 6 sections. The original Chinese document is as follows:-

In summary, Section 3 talked about the difficulty of Yao Ming overcoming cultural and language barriers upon arriving NBA, and how Yao Ming prevented "Total Americanization" by avoiding all the materialistic temptations of the west (never gamble, never take drugs, never go to nightclubs), and never had negative press like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant and other NBA players.

Section 4 talked about his patriotism that he responded to motherland's call to play in major international tournaments every summer.

Section 5 talked about his never-say-die and never-give-up spirits on courts.

Section 6 talked about his social responsibility for repaying to society and country, about all his good deeds and sacrifices of his personal free time to organize the SARS Telethon in 2003, and act as spokesperson for HIV/AIDS Prevention, for Wildlife Preservations, for Special Olympics, for China's Red Cross/Bone Marrow Donars Program.

It is just too damn long that I won't have the time to do the translation at all....................

China won't pressure injured Yao to play at worlds

BEIJING -- Injured center Yao Ming is under no pressure to play at next month's world championships in Japan, according to the commissioner of the Chinese Basketball Association.

The four-time NBA All-Star broke his left foot playing for the Houston Rockets on April 10 against Utah, putting in doubt his participation in the world championships, which begin Aug. 19.

"We will by no means urge him to play the world championship in Japan," commissioner Li Yuanwei told state news agency Xinhua. "He should be fully recovered before considering coming back for the world championship.

"We do not want him to take any risks; he can take his time in recuperation."

Yao, 25, returned to China last week and will join the national squad in Beijing next week from his home in Shanghai.

Zhang Mingji, head of "Team Yao", said his cousin's recuperation was going well.

"He has a good chance to recover in time," Zhang told Xinhua. "Yao himself wanted very much to play, but the CBA officials told him not to hurry."

Yao Ming continued his comeback, working hard with David Macha in his restoration training in Shanghai.

In summary

He jogged around the stadium of the Shanghai Sharks' training centre with David Macha under tremendous heat (Note: It was above 35 degree Centigrade these days in Shanghai.)

He then went to the gym for additional weight-lifting: 110 KG for 8-peat.

He then showed off his 6-pack to his previous Shanghai Sharks colleague who used to make fun of him about his "spare ribs".

He then went back to court for his free throw practice. His FT% was 73% in his 5 CBA seasons. His FT% has increased to 85.3% last NBA season. It was all due to hardwork. David Macha demanded 100 free throws each time from Yao Ming, and he used to make 92 to 94 of his free throws.

When he thought he was through with his free throws practice, David Macha demanded him 15 free throws more. The condition was he needed to make all 15 of them, or else he would have to start it all over again. He had 2 sessions of such free throw sessions, and every time, he had to restart again, as he missed the 15th shot on both occasions.

After the free throw practice, he had to practice his hook shots. He needed to practice his hook shots with both his left and right hand. He needed to score at least 30 hook shots within single-digit minutes before he could stop.

A young Shanghai Sharks player, acted as his ball boy, asked Yao Ming why he had to practice his hook shots with both hands and within a time limit. Yao Ming said: "During practice time, for one fundamental skills, you might practice thousands or ten thousand times. But in real competition, you might just use this shooting skill one time. But what if that is a final killer shot to determine the win or loss of the game ? So in training, you need to be honest with yourself and you should not cheat yourself. No pain no gain. The harder you train, you'll get your reward during the match."

Right after the hook shots, he then had to train on his mid- and long-range jumpers. Out from the 3-point arc, he made 18 out of 20 of his 3-pointers.

I'm telling you, if the Rockets win a championship in the Yao/T-mac era it'll be because they were lucky enough to have Yao fall into their freaking laps. Every year, Yao's going to get better and better, and eventually it's not going to matter who's out there on the court with him. Yao's going to carry us to the promised land. At least that's what I keep telling myself.

I am just wondering why the idiots in Rox Front office did not trade Yao to Jerry West for some "solid" role player in 2003?
