Chinese NBA star Yao Ming has returned to his home in Shanghai on Wednesday evening.

According to Yao's agent Zhang Mingji, the 7-foot-6 center of the Houston Rockets has made significant progress in his recovery from foot surgery.

Zhang said that Yao will have a short rest at home before heading for Beijing to join the national training camp.

The player hoped to return to the national team as soon as possible, and play for China in the upcoming World Championships in August, added Zhang.

Yao broke his left foot on April 10 in Utah. He had surgery four days later, and doctors have ordered him not to play basketball until August 1.

3 & 1/2 months since his surgery on August 1st...plenty of time for it to have healed.

Good news for the CNT, and the Houston Rockets.

    Go YAO...go CHINA !!

While i am rooting for the Dream Team to win, i would love to see Yao absolutely destroy them in the process. I can have it both ways :D

I think the fact that you interpreted what he said as rooting against the 'dream team' is even more 'nice'.

So if someone says 'Go Sixers' before the season because Iverson is one of his favourite players, you'd say he is rooting against the Rockets?

Or if I said 'Go Ivory Coast' before the World Cup started because I like their style of play, you'd say I was rooting against Korea?

CBA calls on "learn from Yao for his professional sports spirit"

I was a little hasitaed to do the translation because it talked a lot about Yao Ming's weakness. Then I thought if we truly like Yao Ming, we should take what he is, not what we imagine he is. That way, we can truly appreciate his effort and give the credit he deserves. Besides, this article also provide an aspect how many chinese think and value regrading sports event.

I am not allowed to start a new thread. Hope someone help me to get this one a new thread, which I beleive deserves.

I am sure there are lots of mistakes in this translation. Sometimes it is even hard for me to find a special term in dictionary(I am sure it is out there, just could not find it). I do not have gramma or vocabulary check. Please bear with me...

    Here it goes:

    ---------------------
Yao Ming is one of the athletes who have the most international influence in Chinese sports history. He is not a born hero. He came this far because of his hard work, wisdom, never give up professional sports spirit.

In his profesional career, Yao Ming, representing CNT, has won Asian Championship four times, Asian Olympics once, as well as the 8th place at the International Olympics. In his four seasons in NBA, he has played 301 games, 291 of them as starter. His average playing time 31.5 m/g, average
17.5 points, last season 22.3pts, one of the highest among centers. He was voted as all-star four times.

On the court, he trains hard, plays hard. Off the court, he cares about his image, he is gentle to others and strict to himself. Because of his outstanding performance, he was awarded 2005 National Working Model. He is hightly received and admired.

It seems Yaoming is getting further and further away from the ordinary prople
while he is getting greater and greater. But Yao Ming is not a comercial star you see on TV everyday, nor is he the untouchable figure on the hugh board erected at the Capital Airport. In fact, he came from within us, our most familar CBA tour. Back then, Few of his teams or opponents could predict his achievment today.

The distance between Yao Ming and othe athletes is not as big as many think. Every one of our athletes should learn from Yao Ming the way he treat himself and his profession, his endlessly persuing success for his career. If you can do it like he does, even if you may not become to another Yao Ming, You will be able to achieve what your potential allows, and be satisfied with your own achievement.

Part One: Yao Ming does not rely on his gifts.

We know that, other than his 2.26m height, Yao Ming actually lack of many gifts which are required to be an outstanding basketball player. Those problems are negleted after his success. Yao Ming is called a "gift of God", as though he was bound to be today's Yao Ming when he was born.

Some people know, while many do not know that Yao Ming's left ear has very
little hearing ability resulting from his illness at age of 8. This seriously affect his comunication with his coaches, teamates, on and off the court. Often he does not hear the sound coming from his left side. When coach talks about game plan, he has to listen with his right ear

Other than his left ear, his body condition was doubted. His shoulder is too
narrow and hip bone is too wide, which limits his ability to turn around and compete. Many coaches doubted on his buscketball talents When Yao ming started.

Yao Ming has short arm compared to his height. Normal person has the same "arm width" and height. gifted buscketball players has big "arm width" than his height. Iranian Center(Ja???) has height 2.20m and width 2.47m. Kevin Genette(?) has height 2.11m and width 2.28m while Yao Ming has 2.26m and 2.20m resectively. This is a serious disadvantage competing for the board.

Yao Ming often takes blame when a shorter opponent takes a ball away over his head without noticing his jump height is at disadvantage. Yao Ming's heel is quite short, seriously affets his jump ability. When he first started track training He was considered not fit for it. His feet also eaily get tired for the same reason.

Yao Ming's left foot also suffered bone broken twice in 1997 and 1998, which further hurt his jump ability.

When we take Yao Ming's success with his 2.26m height for granted we actually forget a very important point: we have many players who have Yao Ming's height with even more buscketball gifts. Yet none of them achieved Yao Ming's success.

Indeed, Yao Ming has height advantage. But his sucess results from his hard
working to overcome his shortcoming. In another word, Yao Ming is not a genius or God. He is like evryone else, has his strenth and weakness. This remind us,a more important factor for an athlete is how you treat your weakness as well as your strength.

    Part two: Yao Ming's professonism

When Yao Ming left CBA in 2002, his weight is 120kg, bend weight(?) 110kg,
fat 10%. After three NBA seasons, his weight now is 140-145 kg, bend weight 150kg fat 6%. In another word, Yao Ming increase his weight by over 20kg, and 19.5 of it is muscle, not fat. His strength increases significantly.

Looking back Yao Ming's last CBA season. Although he averaged 40/20, the competition he faced was not strong. During his growing up process, how many times he was knocked dwon, how many times opponents take him as a weak spot? Compared with Yao Ming, many had better gifts, they were above Yao Ming. And Now Yao Ming has acheived what they could not even imagine. In some sense, with Yao Ming's body and muscle type he can suceed, quite a few Chinese CBA players could have the same success. yet none of them did because few has the professional spirit Yao Ming has.

Yao Ming understands he is a professional player. He understands how to treat his body. His training coach(F???) once said to him: how you treat your body, how your body treats you. Yao Ming remeber this word and make his daily training as a habit.

Yao Ming often felt very tired during his first season in NBA because there are
only 22 games for a CBA regular season while 82 games in NBA with much tougher competition. At one time, he took a rest for 40 days then he found very difficult to get back to the compition level. He coulsulted with coached and players about this and was told that if you take a rest longer than 20 days, your trainning will have to start all over again.

He has never taken a break for more than 20 days since then. Not even in the off season, for past three years.

    -------------------------
(there is more, which I consider of less importance. AND it is a bit late...)

Well, IMHO, I have not much concerns about Yao Ming representing and playing for China in the World Championship.

David Macha, Houston Rockets' Strength and Conditioning Caoch, (the man shown in one of the following photos) followed Yao Ming to Shanghai to assist him in his rehabilitation, and then he will be passed on to the care of Anthony Falsone in Beijing who will continue to drill Yao Ming back to competitive form and shape. Yao Ming said it himself, unless he is 100% fit and sure, he'd rather sit out the championship.

That's a Sohu reporter, I think. Besides, David Macha is very short as compared to Yao Ming's 7ft 6 frame.
