I did read that article. Typical Justice tripe. Unfortunately, the days of great sports reporting in the Houston papers ended when The Houston Post folded. With no local competition, the Chronicle doesn't have to have great writers. At least Solomon has the stones to declare his stuff to be his opinions. I can't tell from day to day what mushroom Justice is tripping on.
I generally only complain about Justice. Soloman may be an idiot, but he at least sticks to his guns most of the time no matter how stupid he sounds. Justice flip flops on his "opinions" daily basis and usually has nothing to say anyway. At least Soloman puts thoughts out there, as dumb as they are. Justice routinely writes things that literally say nothing like this last piece.
Agree on Justice - he appears to be on some time-delayed acid trip most of the time. But Solomon's thoughts aren't necessarily dumb - they are just unpopular and generally have a different slant. At least most of the time, I can follow his line of reasoning. The biggest problem I have with fans of Houston sports teams is that they tend to rationalize away the mediocrity and lack of success those teams have managed to consistently deliver. They also don't want to see or hear anything remotely critical of the players, coaches or owners else they collectively attack the messenger which is what I see happening with Solomon. No, all they want to see and hear are happy thoughts even when said teams are blowing chunks out there. To me this is akin to burying one's head in the sand but I suppose if you can't see or hear criticism, then it won't be true. That's why the mediocrity of the Rockets and failure of the Texans hasn't generated any type of fan backlash in Houston.
This is a BS overgeneralization. We have a lot of people here do *nothing* but whine and moan constantly. We also have a lot of level-headed fans, but generally they aren't posting on BBSs or calling the Sports Radio shows. Houston is like every other city: you got folks of all types. If you think Houston has more "homers" or "whiners" than any other city, I invite you to have a listen, for example, to the drivel that comes over the airwaves in SA or Dallas.
SI postcard from camp: Texans Nothing new or unheard of but nice read with a vid appearance from David Anderson http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/andrew_lawrence/08/13/texans.postcard/
Some criticism is fair, but there are just so many irrational people with the Rockets and Texans (especially Texans on this forum) that it's silly. The Texans deserve criticism for numerous devastating coaching blunders over the past few years, especially last year. I was ready to cut Kubiak loose after the losing streak last year, but am willing to give him one last year to figure it out. If we have a losing record or lose games blatantly due to coaching that keeps us out of the playoffs, I'll be calling for a new coach. Texans front office management has been pretty stellar IMO, and this is where a lot are overly critical. People piss and moan when we don't go overpay some mediocre free agent just to fill a hole (see Leigh Bodden), or blame the team when a free agent just flat out doesn't want to come here. Or claim doom on a season if we don't land Aaron Schobel. They've had their share of mistakes (Green, Weaver, Reeves), but nothing too franchise crippling since the David Carr extension. In the NBA and NFL, unless you luck out and get a true franchise player (Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Kobe Bryant), it's unbelievably hard to stay at the top of the league. The Rockets and Texans have both done a good job staying poised for the chips to fall their way despite not having one of these players, and with any luck will eventually find some real success. A good example is the Steelers, who have their bad/mediocre years but stay close and then take advantage when they get some breaks. In the NBA it's tougher without a top ten player, so we're really just waiting on one of those to become available. The Astros (pre-trades) were a team that deserved the major criticism.
I completely agree, people get on me here all the time when i question a move done by the Texans. I have been called a hater for saying that the Texans do not have an elite front office
Yeah there are many inaccuracies on there like Wade Smith took the place of Pitts and Brisel last year. Smith was on the Chiefs. It also said that Pitts had a career ending injury when he just signed with the Seahawks a couple of weeks ago.
SA and Dallas have far more "homers" per capita than does Houston. On that we can agree. But I'm not talking about homerism per se but rather the intolerance for any opposing viewpoint with regards to the local sports teams. Contrary opinions or points of view shouldn't provoke the types of reactions I see here and in the GARM especially if they come from Justice or Solomon. If one's beliefs are solid - if one is secure in their position, then who cares what some columnist says or writes. In the end, it's the results that matter and that's measured by wins and losses and not by anything written in newspapers or said on the radio or TV.
from the SI link, I found it interesting and out of the blue that MJD thought so highly of Foster and being top sleeper potential for this upcoming year.
Mr. moderator, tear down this wall..umm I mean thread. Tear down this thread. First preseason game tonight!! I'm excited!! Will probably not be that excited after the first 10 plays!! but still!!
Off topic sorta...but I have always wondered why teams with head coaches that do some things well but stink at clock management don't have an assistant who handles time outs- or even hire a time management guru...if it saves you even one game over the course of a couple years it would be worth it. I mean anybody with a good knowledge of football could go "Quick, snap the ball before they review the play" or "Hurry up, we need to get in this play before the two minute warning." Especially if that was like their only duty in the last 5 minutes of a half or game.
No local TV for the Texans game? The best I can find is on the NFL network tonight at midnight. That SUX! The Dallas Cowboys' games are shown statewide. I know the Texans aren't in the same league as the Cowboys but this seems a bit much to me. No wonder half the state doesn't realize the Texans even exist. I was hoping that Fox sports Houston would carry the game live but they have the Lastros on tonight. Sorry but I'll pass on that train wreck.
They'll be on TV per the Texans' homepage: They're also broadcasting in HD to Austin, Beaumont, Corpus, El Paso, Laredo, McAllen, Midland/Odessa, and San Antonio. The preseason games against Arizona, New Orleans and Tampa Bay will be broadcast exclusively in standard definition in the following markets: Bryan/College Station , Tyler, Victoria, and Waco. It's football time in Houston!!
KTRK locally? Good. I'll have to wait for the NFL Network broadcast at midnight. From what I see, the only game we'll get up here live (CBS) is their game against Dallas (of course...).
