Unless, of course, you actually talk to people who follow the Chiefs, who were very sad to lose Smith and credited his mid-season insertion as a full-time starter as a key ingredient in turning their ground game from nonexistent to very good. But what do they know, they're only the guys who watched him consistently over the course of the season -- you guys read a couple of PFT snippets!! It never ceases to amaze how Houston fans have this "woe is me" mentality when it comes to their teams and free agency, and freaking out over bad contracts. This is why it's preferable to build your team from within, and why good GMs stress building from the draft. It's going to be a damn competitive marketplace to get any talent at all without surrendering talent (trade) or an asset (using a draft pick), so you better believe you're going to have to go a little ahead of the market rate to sign a contributor.
however there is a hole in your logic because I have talked to cheifs fans and they say he is no more than a backup who can spot start. He has been in the league for 7 seasons and was only a 1st stringer his rookie season. Texans fans have absolutely no reason to doubt the moves of the front office, they have only accomplished nothing in their entire existence. And you are wrong about it being preferable to build a team completely from within, i won't restate what I have said throughout this thread, you can check it yourself, but EVERY contender makes a FA or trade splash when they need to get an edge.
Um, he was a first stringer for more than half of last season, when the Chiefs run game was outstanding. You'll always find homers to diminish the value of players lost by their respective teams, but by and large, he was respected as a real contributor. I've talked to people in that organization with that viewpoint, and if I have time this weekend, I'll go to a couple of the KC message boards and dig up the threads from March. I think you'll see the vast majority found him to be a solid player. As for the latter part, yes, of course you need free agent pickups. The thing is, show me contenders' free agent splashes, and you'll find that the vast majority are paid ahead of market rate (the only ones who aren't take a discount to play with a perceived championship team, which the Texans can't offer yet). I'm not saying the Texans shouldn't make occasional free agent splashes. But when they do - and especially until they're a proven winner - they're going to have to somewhat overpay. It's just the nature of the beast, and fans shouldn't start with the "OMGZZZ THEY PAID WHAT?!?" unless they want the Texans to lay off FA entirely. The Rick Smith era has been a pretty damn good one in terms of the acquisition and infusion of talent onto this roster.
This. I get tired of people saying "the texans front office hasn't accomplished anything". Uhh, yeah they have. They've accomplished a lot. Now, if you want to say the game day coaches haven't accomplished much, that's in the realm of play. But the FO has been mostly lights out in terms of additions and subtractions.
I've looked at the last few pages...have any of you realized that Bernard pollard signed the Houston texans tender..it's on chron.com in the sports section
Jamaal Charles had something to do with that, too. After high mileage unmotivated Larry Johnson punked himself off the team. I'm not that down on the signing though. If Wade does the same exact thing he did in KC this past year he'll be okay. Better than the other lineman Wade (Todd) the Texans acquired years back. (My own quote yeah, just its part indication how you know football and Texans talk has precedent over basketball and in Houston. I dont think I've posted a "lol" in the GARM in 4 years. )
so the cowboys released Flozell Adams, do you want him or not? he is a great player, but he also committ a lot of penalties, so I dont know
I found this pretty good interview of Bob McNair. It's pretty long so I won't post it here. I'll just post the link instead. http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2010/04/01/...s-coach/?ncid=txtlnkusspor00000002&xid=si_nfl I love the last quote by him.
Marc Bulger was just cut, I would give him a small contract to be the backup, he can't be worse than Dan O
That is great news! Rackers will win that outright.. I am happy. I thought this might have been your hope rather than real news, so here is a link: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5058753
Adam_Schefter Texans gave Neil Rackers a two-year, $4.1 million deal that includes $350,000 guaranteed. But he'll have to win job to earn his money.
