Ecstatic that things turned around and the Texans kept Walter. I feel loads better already. Plus the sting of Dunta going was eased in a major way when it came out that his Falcons deal is double if not triple what I'd offer him to stay here. Have fun with that, Atlanta.
Walter is a solid number 2 receiver and that contract is fair for both sides. Speaking of the Kyle Vanden Bosch signing, I have no idea why the Lions would pay him that much money when he is clearly on the decline. He has 7.5 sacks combined the past 2 seasons.
No. Getting Walter for a 7th round pick and a minimal contract was a Morey-esque deal. So far, Morey has NOT chosen to resign any of the players he obtained cheaply. They trade Donte Green for Artest, Landry for Martin, and was close to trading Scola for Amare. Morey so far has preferred to trade away assets before they become expensive rather than retaining them. The Texans resigned Walter at market value. It's as simple as that. I don't have a problem with it, since I there isn't a another receiver out there we could've replaced him with for no draft compensation. But it's not a great deal. It's a "normal" deal.
1) Donte Green never showed he was worth big money. 2) Scola or Landry had to go in large part because of the fact they were one of the resources the Rockets could actually stand to lose (two talented guys at the same position, makes sense to cash one out) So, that isn't a fair comparison at all. And besides, Lowry and Scola (both gotten on the cheap), will be resigned this offseason. While I agree it wasn't a "great" deal, he probably would've gotten more from another team and I think it is a good deal for us.
Market value was set with Burleson's $25 million contract, and we got Walter (arguably a better receiver, and a better fit for us) for $21 mil. Maybe Morey was a bad example, because in free agency it's almost impossible to make a "steal" (see Trevor Ariza). But as far as free agency in the NFL goes, I think we are very fortunate that Walter didn't get a bigger deal elsewhere that the Texans weren't willing to pay(thank you Anquan Boldin).
Unless we know that other teams offered more money for Walter, there's no reason to think he took less money to be with us. Whatever one may think of Walter's value, it's obvious that GMs think otherwise. Burleson got more money because team(s) valued him higher. Baltimore's willing to trade for Boldin because they don't value Walter that high. My point is that the Texans didn't "find" Walter and swooped in to give him a below-market contract before everyone else figured out his worth. Rather, Walter played the FA market, and chose the Texans among his suiters.
only 8 million guaranteed for a solid #2 WR who CLEArly fits this offense and our #1 WR (who isn't going anywhere). I think that's a great deal. Easily replaceable? Maybe. But not many guys have played all that well on the other side from Andre. The fact that we know Walter can do it is big. And we didn't have to overpay at all.
I'm glad Walter is coming back to the Texans. When I read he would be an unrestricted free agent a long time ago, I thought he would leave. Now that he's coming back it feels like we picked up a free agent. He's a great #2 receiver and I hope he's a Texan the rest of his career.
You also have to consider cost of replacement. We'd have to use at least a 3rd round pick or higher, IMO, to equal Walter's contribution next season (and that's doubtful considering rookie WR's usually take a while to produce in the NFL). You sacrifice taking a RB, CB, or DT with one of those high picks if you have to replace Walter. Or, the other alternative- signing a FA receiver. Unless we were going to downgrade or just take our chances with Jacoby, we probably would've had to spend more than what we paid for Walter for a guy like Antonio Bryant.
Glad to hear KW is coming back, I think we would have had to draft a WR high had he left. BTW, the Ravens absolutely stole Boldin from the Cards IMO.
Yeah, no kidding...That was a great deal for the Ravens. That'll be a team to watch out for next season. Speaking of the Cardinals, they lose Rolle, Dansby, Boldin, and Warner. They have some major holes to fill now.
Back to the cellar they go. Man, the 49ers fans might as well buy playoff tickets now... they could get in with a 7-9 record now.
It's painfully obvious making a serious playoff push is not as important as waiting to see what happens with the CBA. Bob McNair is worried more about the CBA than any success this season. Hell, the tickets are sold out anyway so no need to worry about fan backlash.
Where did you get this idea from? What FA were you expecting to come here? I haven't seen anything from Bob that says hes cheap.
I never argued whether or not it was the CORRECT move by the Texans. Simply whether it was a "steal" or "incredible" move. I just want to make that distinction clear. I feel it is the correct move. But only based on the premise that the management will improve elsewhere. If we resign Walter and sign Leigh Bodden, we'd basically have the same roster as we did last year. So whatever money we save by not pursuing better WRs better be used elsewhere. Otherwise, this a signing I can only begrudgingly accept.
not cheap. He wants to wait for the New CBA (He's very involved in the Owners union) to get finalized so he can make deals. It's like waiting on buying a new car until you hear about the status of the economy.
I am very happy with the Texans approach thus far. I would have liked to have Peppers, but not at a Redskins-like stupity contract.
So, poor Falcons, first we got Matt Schaub from them, then Dunta Robinson gets overpayed by the Falcons.
