To answer your question, yes. Only restricted free agents (players who have accrued less than a specific number of years in service time) can be tendered this way. After they reach that threshold of years, when their contracts run out they are unrestricted free agents and cannot be limited by their own teams unless the team chooses to put a tag on them.

So if they franchised tagged him again he would have been a restricted free agent?

Good pickup for the Bears. If they get Peppers, they're gonna be legit SB contenders.

Rumor on twitter was it's actually a 6 year deal but we all know he is long gone before then so they must have front loaded the deal.

Man, it's tough to offer Walter more than Burleson got (Detroit overpaid for him IMO). I'm sure our front office is torn right now.

That is WAY too much for Nate Burleson. Walter is better and does not deserve that kinda money.

Looks like McNair's stand against overpaying players just got a lot more difficult.

If Boldin goes to the Ravens then it might benefit the Texans in trying to get Walter back in the fold. Bengals vs Texans for Walter...IN A STEEL CAGE!!!

Crap, I dont want Boldin going to the Ravens either, haha...theyre our competition and we play them next season, so bolstering their offense would be scary.

Didn't know we were going after KVB :
Might have made for a great rush on third down: KVB, Antonio Smith, Amobi, Mario
