Texans | Casserly comments about Young's Wonderlic test
    Sun, 26 Feb 2006 15:14:44 -0800

… said Casserly. He was asked how the test would impact the Texans opinion of Young and he replied, "Well, I can only speak for the Houston Texans. I can't speak for 31 other teams. I just said how we evaluate it. It doesn't make any difference what the test score is to us. We're going to go through the same evaluation. I could point to players that have high test scores but couldn't necessarily learn football. So you go through that process, and then we'll evaluate that player's ability to learn our system at the end of it."

Probably Casserly is familiar with this study. Absolutely zero relationship between the Wonderlic and QB performance in college or the pros.
    http://www.thesportjournal.org/2005Journal/Vol8-No2/mac-mirabile.asp

McNair, Marino, McNabb, Cunningham. Plenty good enough sampling of Pro Bowl quarterbacks with sub 16 Wonderlic’s to see Casserly’s perspective. Also note Drew Henson (just sent to NFL Europe), Jason Maas (?), Alex Smith, and Hugh Millen are the 4 QBs I can find with 40+ scores.

FYI from what Casserly said (without actually saying the score) it sounds like VY's test is really a 16.

I am 99% sure I would score higher and finish faster than you. But thats irrelevant.

Of course, Desert scar points out that the test has nothing to do with QBS performances in the NFL. They do the test for fun. The test has been a part of the draft process for 20 plus years but it means nothing. Passer efficiency however means everything.

But according to you, passing effeciency means nothing while a test that has nothing to do with football means everything.

This would be a good opportunity to announce that The_Conquistador has never scored below the top 1/2 of 1% on any standardized test.

Now continue your debate about the intellectual bottom feeders.

What do you think is more important?

    1. Having the highest passing efficiency in the NCAA.

    or

    2. Having a high score on the Wonderlich.

False score gives Young wrong kind of buzz

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/texansfront/3687374.html

INDIANAPOLIS - Like his performance in the Rose Bowl, quarterback Vince Young rallied from a huge deficit to pull out a personal victory that might have earned him millions of dollars.

On Saturday, a rumor that Young had scored a 6 on the Wonderlic test sent shock waves through the combine. No coach, scout or general manager surveyed could produce an example of a starting quarterback with a single-digit Wonderlic score.

The test — 50 multiple-choice, non-football questions in 12 minutes — is a barometer that teams use to gauge a prospect's ability to learn.

On Sunday, the combine said the test score of 6 that was being reported by some media outlets was false.

"I've been told it was inaccurate by a source good enough for me to quote it," Texans general manager Charley Casserly said Sunday afternoon.

Young took the test again and scored 16. According to Young's agent, Major Adams, the Sunday test was administered by Jeff Foster, executive director of National Scouting Combine.

"The combine officials assured us that score (6) was false and that the accurate score will be known when the combine results are given to each team," Adams said.

Wonderlic scores are supposed to be confidential and are never confirmed publicly by the NFL. Because they are included in combine results given to teams after the combine, scores leak out.

"The number really doesn't mean anything to us because we go through a process of four or five other ways to evaluate it," Casserly said. "The number's insignificant to us in the end. It's the other areas that we put more weight on."

Prospects can take the Wonderlic tests as many times as they want.

"I heard about the 6," Tennessee general manager Floyd Reese said Sunday morning. "I heard the test was improperly given, and I heard they're going to try and correct it.

"It could be improperly given because of time. It could be improperly given because when you correct it, there are like six or seven different tests. If you correct Test A with a correct sheet for Test C, it's not going to come out very well.".........

    Interview goes well

While Young's Wonderlic tests created a huge controversy, he was busy interviewing with different teams, including the Texans.

"I thought the interview went well," Young said. "I thought coach (Gary) Kubiak was cool.

"They asked me a lot of questions about offense. At the end, they asked me why I thought I'd be good for the team. I basically told them that I'm a high-character guy that wants to win. I said it's important to be a leader.

"I told them I wanted a chance to lead them to a Super Bowl win."

Kubiak was impressed with Young, too.

"We had a great interview with him," Kubiak said. "I wanted him to tell me why football's important to him. I wanted to talk to him about his leadership qualities. We talked a lot about offense.

"I was very, very impressed with the kid. But I was impressed with Reggie Bush, too."

If someone scores a 6, they are mentally challenged and you have people coming in here and making fun of that. I hope when any of you have kids that they don't have any sort of learning or mental disabilities. You also better hope that the whole karma thing just makes good television shows.

All this because the color of the jersey Vince Young wore in college.

I wouldn't say that the scores dont matter at ALL..

it depends how much talent you have to overcome it..

obviously someone who makes a 50 with no talent will never be good...

but I think if two players have the same exact talent.. the player with a 30 might have a little more success in the pros than the 6..

but if you have a player with a great arm and a 6.. and a p layer with a below average arm and a 30.. the guy with the 6 probably still has the talent to be better than the guy with the 30...

In other words, there are a lot of great qbs with low scores... but they might have been even better if they had higher scores..

Does anybody know if that Texans brought in that "Brain Doctor" guy who predicted Ryan Leaf would be a bust? I went to his site and they've been tracking the QB at Tenn. because when he was 10, the Brain Doctor predicted he'd be an NFL QB.

Anyways, that guy is doing something right, I'd like him to evaluate Bush and Young.

Doesn't that guy just sort of evlauate body language and personality types to give one of those Myers-Briggs "INTP/ENFP ...whatever" categories? I'm pretty sure Young would score off the charts in that assessment as far as leadership & the rest..
