I really don’t get some of you anti Vince guys. I’ve never been in the draft bush camp but I’m not gonna argue this guy can’t do what he did or won’t be as effective. The guy was a stud. I just never thought he could help the Texans out that much. Vince on the other hand by the fact he is a qb can do wonders for the franchise, if he lives up to the hype. All draft picks are risks. You have to weigh risk vs. reward. I think Vince has the higher upside, but yes he is the bigger risk. But every draft pick is a risk. So that’s not really an argument for or against anyone of these guys.

Combine times are electronic. If it wasn't electronically timed - I don't care about it.

This just sounds funny to me.

BTW, Stevel- Take a look at the VY video I posted above. I think it might answer some of your questions about his passing and running ability.

This idiot (me) was making a prediction as a fan. It's an opinion. A guess. Something to do for fun. :)

I sure wouldn't guess that Carr will be in the Hall of Fame.

I just like Young better than Carr. They both have only showed us potential.

What will Carr do with a good offense? What will Young become in the NFL?

I did predict Earl Campbell would be in the Hall of Fame when the Oilers drafted him.

    I'm 1 for 1 so far.

You're forgiven. You are entitled to your opinion. If you predict Young to be HOF, before he takes 1 snap in the NFL that's fine. I just think it's silly, because he hasn't even been drafted yet.

I would respond the same, if someone said Bush would be HOF.

It just takes a while and anything is possible.

Yeah, I haven't heard a single pro-Bush person compare him to Gayle Sayers or Barry Sanders. Not a one.

I know it's silly, I was silly on purpose- it's fun to make outrageous statements on a BBS board for the sake of being overly excited.

If I must be serious how about-

Young hasn't taken many snaps under center at UT, will have to adjust to NFL schemes and must be able to put more on the ball throwing the out pattern, Young will need to adjust to NFL speed and learn not to take on tacklers when he scrambles. Young will have to have an offense tailored to his strengths; one that will give him opportunities to make plays with his arm and legs. Young will have to avoid trying to do too much and be careful throwing up passes for grabs. It will take him 1-2 years to adjust if he has good coaching and an offense that suits his strengths.

Having said all that- Young has tremendous scrambling skills and the strength to break arm tackles. He can make defenders miss and has very deceptive speed. Young has improved dramatically as a passer and shows the ability to make decisions in the pocket and out. Young does a good job of looking off his options and finding open receivers. He showed much improved touch last season and with good coaching should be able to make NFL throws. He has a quick release and is tall enough to get the ball out. Young has shown tremendous poise and leadership under many pressure situations. Young has the potential to put more pressure on defenses than any QB prospect in recent drafts.- Any team looking to rebuild beginning at the QB position should consider drafting him- he's a franchise type QB.

I look at this different, because they say that his style of running is compared to some great running backs. Whether he does it at the NFL level remains to be seen.

Those are all very fair statements.

I like our options going into the draft either way. I just think Young needs more time to develop. With the right scheme, protection, and development, he has the potential to be very successful.

    how about "instant impact?"

come on...the hype for reggie has equalled or surpassed the hype for VY.

If Vince would have been on the Texans from the beginning instead of Carr, do you think that he would have had more success at this point in his career?

Assuming that all other factors are the same.

I personally think so and when I think of the reasons, the main one that I come back to is Vince's competitive nature and his ability to lead. He's a winner and he won't be denied.

the throwing motion is a non-issue because the dude is a legit 6'5". David Carr had issues with his throwing motion, is shorter, and he doesn't get balls knocked down at an alarming rate.

Not with talent Carr has had, and not with the current defense. Can VY rush the passer while covering WRs at the same time. :)

Throwing motion is an issue because it has much more to do with passing than whether or not a pass gets knocked down. The longer a lever the more velocity that is imparted to the ball - basic mechanics. When VY throw intermediate routes (which are VERY important in the NFL) he drops his arm WAY down. This dramatically shortens the lever and thus reduces the balls velocity. He can probably throw a decent deep ball because there is more of a wind up and he probably releases the ball at a higher point. He does not do this on short and intermediate routes. When these routes get jumped by DBs, they get returned for TDs. Throwing motion is an issue.

I know the DBs in the NFL are a lot faster but has Vince young ever had a route "jumped". has any of his interceptions in college been of that nature. I don't seem to remember one.

thank's for the physics lesson though, but we'll start to get legit reports on arm strength in a few weeks when they start working out.

I have watched the game 3 times, 2 later times with an individual focus on VY, Leinart, Bush, LenDale, etc. I have seen over 50% of the plays both VY and Reggie Bush have been in their college careers. So try again pardner.

I seriously don't know which game you watched. SC protected against the deep ball and deep sidelines all game. VY threw a few 30 yard plus passes, and they were double covered with safeties and corners in great position. He wisely didn't try to throw many more, he showed tremendous patience in not forcing these balls, the mark of a QB. Overall of VY throws 2 were balls that should have been picked, maybe 1 more borderline. If fact Matt Leinart, who I thought was terrific, made more bad decisions and threw more bad balls (1 was picked, 2-3 more hit the Texas defenders in both hands).

But VY threw plenty of intermediate balls with zip where the defense had holes (in particular to Pittman and Sweed over the middle). They typically showed excellent touch and hit WRs in stride, SC would have picked them off if they were tipped by his own guys or inaccurate, it was their game plan. Yes he through some to the sidelines sometimes that were low, a couple times it didn't allow his WR to catch a run. But that is a whole lot safer throw than throwing those high which can lead to a pick 6s. I think they were just slightly off throws and VY being conservative in keeping them low, I really doubt it is an true arm strength issue the way he through the 25 yard bullets over the middle (not discounting some mechanical adjustments and reminding VY in the Pros to zip it rather than flicking off the back foot which he could get away with due to his exellent field sense about defenders). Note: Smart NFL QBs also error on keeping those intermediate sideline balls down. BTW I didn't see a problem with Leinart's arm either, who is considered to have a weaker arm than one VY.

Overall VY was tremendously impressive and effective passing the ball, even on the last 2 drives with incredible pressure he made key throws or Texas would have lost, it wasn't all his running. He was't perfect, but he was accurate, precise, and made the right progressions 90% of the time in the passing game, a hell of job in that type of game against that good a secondary and that good of a defensive coach.

Nice. Can't compare VY playing style to Steve Young or Roger Staubach or Joe Montana (all known more for decision making, touch, accuracy, good feet than canon arms) but fine to compare Bush's "running style" to Sanders or Sayers.

BTW Steve Young ran about a 4.5 and he was darn fast as a QB and it created havoc to NFL defenses when he harnessed it (when he learned to scramble to pass or scramble to move the ball down field, but the defense doesn't know it). Howie Long said the same thing about Elway his early part of his career, who used to tuck and run at the 1st sign of trouble only to learn later to alter his style (scramble to pass more, avoid big hits downfield).

So yes VY would have adjutsments in the pros and be more selective when tucking it to run downfield. Some of the best of the best athlete/QBs like SYoung and Elway had to learn this too. Further, no one is going to think less of VY if he "only" runs a 4.5 to go along with his 6'5 230 frame (whose frame looks like no trouble to add weight without loss of speed), leadership, quickness, decision making and composure. Evaluating his arm strength/potential strength is going to be 5x more important than whether VY runs a 4.4, 4.5 or 4.6. I'll say right now I think VY arm will be average or better strength when evaluated, and that is plenty given his other attributes, but the NFL guys will certainly know a lot more about this than me.
