Reporter: "Reggie Bush, what's the first thing you are going to do when you go #1 to Houston?"

Bush: "Well, the first thing I'm going to do is buy Vince Young's parents house, throw them out, and then deck it out in USC & Texan's memorabilia."

    VY: "Mother****er."

Not saying it gives him any extra credibility or exceptional football knowledge, but Mac was on the '69 National Championship Longhorn team.

Out of all the Copyrighted videos on YouTube they pick the one I uploaded.

I don't think he ran the ad to say "hey, I am knowledgeable so listen to me." He ran the ad to say "hey, shop at Gallery Furniture."

Vince is on the Hot List and said he was shocked by Casserly's comments about the Texans not having him on their radar.

And his response to the comments was that whatever team he goes to that if and when they play the Texans "it's going to be on!"

    swilkins,

While I do agree with you as much as possible in that Bush is a better fit for this team today and Bush will be a great player for us or for anybody in the NFL and will probably have a long and highly successful career, and will make whoever he plays for a very good team as long as he is on the field, and will in all likelihood have the opportunity to play in a Super Bowl, maybe two, playing alongside a very good, highly skilled QB in David Carr, who can make the throws, and can scramble around a good bit, and could become a very good QB under the tuteledge of our head coach IF he gets all those criteria that you mentioned in your post................................

I respectfully disagree that it is solely about Reggie Bush vs. Vince Young.

Now, IF it were simply a matter of drafting one guy or the other, then your points carry a lot more weight. But, that is not the case at the present moment.

Here is what we know with a slight degree of certainty today:

    1. Bush and Mario Williams are clearly going to go 1-2 barring a trade.

    2. If we take Bush #1 (which in all likelihood we will), then either Mario goes to NO or they trade down a couple spots to 3,4, or 5, where they can still get him and somebody moves up to draft ML.

    3. If we take MW #1, (not likely), then at least one team is willing to step up to the plate and break the bank to trade up to get Reggie Bush.

    4. Tennessee and the Jets are the real wild cards in this draft. Nobody knows for sure what they are thinking and what they want out of this draft. Everybody pretty much knows the Saints want MW. Tennessee has made overtures and gave plenty of misdirection about both ML and VY. And NY is holding their cards pretty close.

So, I am going to paint this picture in just a little bit different light for you based on a number of IFs that really are not any more unrealistic than your IFs .

IF a deal does not get done to move NO down, and they take Mario Williams at #2 after we take RB, and IF Norm Chow gets his wish and takes ML without the Titans agreeing to a deal to move down, that leaves the Jets on the clock at #4 with VY still sitting there. IF the Jets are not sold on VY, then the opportunity could exist to work a trade with them for RB, that is to say, they would probably be willing to part with at least their first rounders this year for Bush, and maybe more.

IF they were willing to do this deal, and we were able to get VY plus another player (defensive back starter), a significant impact player with just one more first round pick of theirs, then all of a sudden the trade off becomes VY plus the other impact player, plus whatever other talent we could get for Carr after next year vs. what we can do with Carr and Bush. And this is just based on IF all we could get from the Jets was VY and one other first round pick.

Now granted, it hurts us in the short run. I'm not a VYOF. I think he will have to sit and learn for one year or at the very least get his head handed to him for a year or two like Elway did in Denver.

IF all the criteria you used to justify the selection of Bush and the maturation of Carr comes true, then surely we can apply the same IFs to VY's development and maturation. And then look at what you have?

Let's be honest about VY vs. Carr. It's like comparing Elway to Boomer Esiason, Staubach to Craig Morton. I'm not being prejudice or judgmental against Carr. I'm trying to say he's a very talented QB, who with the right system and the right protection will put up very good to great numbers in this league and win a SB or two.......maybe.....possibly.

But..............Carr is a QB from a small college program who did not play under the pressure and scrutiny of a national contending program and did not play the level of competition that VY played at Texas. While Carr was a very good leader, you have to be able to see that his leadership skills do not transcend the game. And we know for a fact, his leadership skills do not translate to making those around him significantly better whether it be at Fresno or with the Texans. This is a discussion of the all-important intangibles that players bring to the table. They can't be quantitified but you can see the results. I'm not saying that Carr should have won more games than he has given the talent he was surrounded by. I'm saying there should have been some demonstration of his outstanding leadership abilities by now. Instead, there has been suttle criticisms of his leadership from within the team. Don't get me wrong. I really like Carr. I like his fire when we are in a tight ballgame. He played his tail off at the end of the year. But Byron Leftwich and a whole host of other QBs play with that fire and passion. It has to translate to the other team members and they have to be able to look at the dude barking the signals and KNOW they are going to get the job done.

What is the one lasting memory we have of Carr from last year? I hate to say it, but as much as I like the guy, the lasting memory of him from last year is him and Gary Walker in a yelling match on the sidelines. Did you ever see teammates yelling at Elway or Montana, even when Elway was getting his face ground into the turf his first 3 years in the league? It's just one moment in the season, but the point is there are NO MOMENTS that we can look at after 4 years in the NFL that demonstrate Carr's leadership ability in a positive light that can put him on the level of an Elway or Montana.

VY is not in the NFL yet and we can point out his great leadership ability. We've already seen it in action. Yes, it was at the collegiate level, but leadership is leadership. It don't matter if it is a group of kindergartners or a seasoned squad of NFL players, the leaders lead, and the followers follow. VY, in his own words, has the gall, audacity, guts, brevity, cockiness, whatever you want to call it, to step up to the plate and tell us that he has always been the leader. And he has proven it on the field, in the heat of battle, on multiple occasions by ALWAYS making the clutch play in his teams favor. Now, that's a record to stand on. Does that mean that he will ALWAYS make the clutch play? Impossible. But the odds are a lot higher that he will than he won't. How many players can you say that about? Can you say that about Carr after 4 years in the NFL? VY can already say it because he has already proven that aspect of his game.

The true knock on VY are all the tangibles as funny as that seems. It is his throwing delivery, his football IQ, his ability to run and NFL offense, etc. etc. etc. And those questions are all being asked of one of the most superior athletes of this era, a much better athlete than Carr, and the most successful of NFL QBs today in Peyton, Brady, or Big Ben. It's foolishness.

Now add to VY another impact starter, either a cornerback or a lineman to stablize the offensive line that would at the very least be included in a trade to the Jets for Reggie Bush. Shoot, throw in a running back if you think we need one, Deangelo Williams, or Mulroney. Sure, we won't be as good next year. So what. We will be improved and all it means is come draft time next year we will be in a better position to get a better player than we will have if we draft Bush and fight for a wild card. Not to mention the talent we can garner from trading a player like Carr that has established himself as a very good player in this league.

Now, consider the rules of the league. The NFL is all about quarterbacks. Quarterbacks are the meal ticket of the NFL. They sell the tickets, they are who the fans come to see PRIMARILY. The rules are designed, modified, and added to almost every year to grant more protection to the quarterback. The QB touches the ball every offensive play. But, has the opportunity to avoid contact on almost every play, including plays where he runs the ball. You think Vince's scrambling ability will aid him just a little bit in the injury department when he can run upfield and slide without being hit or he can scramble around and throw the ball away before being hammered? Yeah, Carr can move around a little bit. Sure, he was trying to make a play and hung around until he got nailed. VY does all those things plus he escapes and makes positive yardage or the play breaks down and he runs around and gets a dump off pass completed for 8 yards. Vince has the ability to create something out of nothing that Carr just does not have.

The one other intangible is Vince's word and determination. He will get it done. He has told us that. He has done it at every level. You can see it in his eyes, you can see it in his step, you can hear it in his voice. And he's already shown us by winning and raising the play of his teammates at every level. He will make the players around him better until they win the big one. He will win the Super Bowl. And once he wins it, he will win it again. Carr may win it, he may not win it. He didn't win anything at Fresno State. Did he win in H.S.? I don't know. Probably won a lot of games. Did he win the big game? Carr may win the big game in the NFL but it won't be because he was the difference maker. It will be because he is a very good player surrounded by a very good team and a very good coach with a very good system. Vince will win it because of his sheer will, system irrelevant, injured teammates irrelevant, play called irrelevant, he will make it happen.

Reggie Bush, as great as he is, cannot do those things from the running back position. No running back can. It's impossible. Granted Elway didn't win it until he got Terrell Davis. TD would have been an average back on most other teams. It was the combination of Elway and a system designed to unleash Elway's full potential that brought Denver those Super Bowls. Davis was simply the running back that was most functional during that time. Davis thrived in the system because of a combination of his natural talent, the blocking schemes, and the unpredictability of Elway. Elway thrived no matter what.

IF VY is sitting there at pick #4, and NY really wants Bush, we have the opportunity to not only pick up a championship player on every level, but also extra pieces that will help this team at other positions. And we have the opportunity to temper our turn around next year in order to get a better players/picks in 2007 and really build a juggernaut team that could be the team of the next decade. IF we draft RB, we will have a tremendous offensive season in 2006-07 and will be in the running for a wild card. And we will undoubtedly be a perennial playoff team in the future. We probably have good odds on playing in a Super Bowl down the road with Bush. Whoever drafts VY WILL win a Super Bowl, there's not doubt in my mind.

This draft is so much like the 84 NBA draft, it isn't funny. It's loaded with talent at the top, great talent, but there is a dominating piece. Portland passed on Jordan for Bowie because they already had Drexler just like we are going to pass on Vince because we already have Carr. In hindsight, the Rockets could have moved Ralph Sampson to Portland for Clyde Drexler and Portland's #1 choice. What would a team of Olajuwon, Drexler, and MJ won? Probably 10 or more championships. Of all the great players in that 84 class, Jordan was the dominant.

There are a lot of great players in this draft and a ton of really good players. I understand the reasoning behind drafting Reggie Bush, just like I understand the reasoning behind not trading Ralph Sampson and I understand the rationale Portland used to pick Sam Bowie over Jordan. But you can see this coming from miles off. VY will be the dominant player of this draft, even more than Bush just like MJ was more dominant than Hakeem, Barkley, Stockton, and all the rest. Forget the synergy of VY being from Houston and playing at UT. Make it meaningless. You can still see it coming. He has the sheer will to be the dominant player of his generation, just like Jordan, just like Kobe has today. He wants more than to just be the #1 pick in the draft. He wants more than the Heisman trophy. He wants scoreboard. And he gets what he wants everytime.

My only prayer is that somehow Norm Chow wins the battle in Tennessee and they take Leinart with their pick. Otherwise, I fear we are staring many more 'Love ya Blue' days in the face with many heartache losses at the hands of a miracle worker that lives in our backyard but plays on the other team that used to be our team. It could not get any worse.

The short term answer for this team is Reggie Bush. The long term winner for this team is Vince Young and whatever else we get with him and for David Carr.

did anyone hear merrill hodge's comments on vince young, lienart, and cutler on dan patrick's show. he said he felt cutler was the only one worthy of first round, that lienart is a third round guy, and that young is only worth a third pick as an athlete and a second day qb.

then he broke out with brodie croyle should go higher than young and lienart

good post jopatmc. The question I have is if the texans sign Bush ahead of time (fri, sat morning)does that make it hard to trade him on draft day? Is there a salary cap penalty etc, are we pretty much locked into him once he's signed?

I've got the same questions. Can't help but believe/hope that the Texans aren't smarter than this and are actually smoke screening what they really want to do. (Casserly did say they were not going to DRAFT VY. He didn't say that they weren't going to ACQUIRE VY.)

But still, I have a difficult time believing that the collective bargaining agreement or whatever the NFL has in place doesn't have trade restrictions similiar to the NBA on how soon you can trade a newly signed player.

    jopatmc,

A superb critique of the situation. IMO, you described perfectly the consequences that could arise from the 2006 NFL Draft with your previous post. Bravo.

    OKOKOK

    here's the trade.

Carr and Bush to NY for

Vince Young, Jonathan Vilma, #29 this year, and their 1st rounder next year.

    Well said.

I do understand what you are saying. If they had drafted VY, I would have been fine, because I know that there are 10 other players around him. I just wasn't expecting immediate results. No one should.

How successful VY will be depends on how he is utilized and those that surround him including coaching and development.

That's the case with all QB's. Unfortunately, Carr has proven how bad things can get, when you don't have all the right pieces in place.
