Because Hakeem was never that dominant during the regular season. That's why our franchise record is only 58 wins, and Hakeem has only 1 MVP. Now, to his credit, Hakeem was a monster in the playoffs when it mattered most, so that's why he's considered top 10 player of all time by some people. So to say that Harden is a better regular season offensive player is saying nothing controversial. But Harden has to prove himself in the post season before surpassing Hakeem overall.
Dumb thread but here goes. Hakeem had two quadruple doubles. Two. In the same season. If Westbrook or Harden did that this year the race would be over.
Before I had fully formed a conscience or the love for the Rockets as I do now, I sadly did not get to see Hakeem Olajuwon win us the back to back championship live (born in '95), but to me he will always be the man who led us to our first and second Championship. The way I see it, the Rockets is a ship, a rocketship. During the 80s and 90s Hakeem Olajuwon was our leader/captain/hero/savior. During 2000-2010 u could argue that tracy or yao was the one, but they didn't really yield anything no rings or anything, but still they are part of our history and culture. Now I can honestly say, that Harden is the true successor to the Rockets and the greatest chance we have after Hakeem to win a ring. I don't see it as Harden making the greatest Rocket player obsolete, I see it as Harden earning his place in Rockets history alongside Hakeem as our captain. Granted there are many other great rockets players, hence the 50th anniversary honoring, but get real none are on the level of Hakeem and Harden. When Rocket fans start threads like this, probably just want to troll around. This thread is like saying DeAndre Hopkins made Andre Johnson career obsolete. Another player cannot overwrite another players accomplishment only surpass it. Harden is great and all, but please even I know 2 rings is better than no rings. Sorry if too long.
@Os Trigonum Im sorry man, I wasn't trying to knock your thread at all. I didn't even click on this thread until you mentioned it. Mainly because I think it is a bad question. Secondly, I think those options you have listed are crazy, and I can't choose any of them.
Hakeem was also on some pretty bad teams. He went to the Finals in the 80s but that team got decimated. Then it was a mess until Rudy T took over
Harden is certainly better regular season performer, especially on offense. Still need to prove in the post-season tho.
I remember posting similar question back in 14-15 and people dismissed it as nonsense. Now, statistically 14-15 Harden was almost as good as Hakeem's MVP season, and this year Harden definitely beats out Hakeem's best offensive season. It would be interesting to see what the consensus will be if Harden plays just as well in the coming playoffs.
There is no one now or in the future, who can ever make Hakeem Olajuwon obsolete. Harden is not in Hakeem's class.
Man there must be a crack epidemic on Clutchfans. Obviously there's quite a few on here who never saw Hakeem play. "Harden making Hakeem obsolete"????? OP should be banned for life as should anyone who agrees with him. That said, PUT THE CRACK PIPE DOWN FIRST AS IT'S FRYING YOUR BRAIN!!!
The next game Harden dominates defensively will be his first. He is clearly NOT better, regular or post season
