Uhhh yeah they also had Shaq dominate the league and Kobe to tear up what was left. That's 2 superstars getting teammates wide open shots. That's not motion offense.

Here's the thing, I have no problem with a motion offense. But: The Kings met 2 superstars and didn't get past them. Assuming we have learned the motion offense by these playoffs, you are telling me we will be getting guys uncontested layups and that they will make their jumpers because of it? Fine. But you are betting on Head, Rafer, Battier, etc. Not exactly a solid playoff rap sheet there.

Again, I hope I am wrong about this and we freaking win but if the role players go cold (they are not the stars of the team), we're going right back to T-Mac and Yao. And yeah there might be a few situations where people stand around and watch them go 1 on 1. If they miss the shot, oh well.

I'd put my money on McGrady and Yao over Rafer and Head.

Yes, I'm pretty sure they still ran the triangle. You might be pretty sure too if you knew what the triangle was and actually watched the games.

And who exactly are these tons of media people who talked about trading Yao? Do you have a link handy? I seem to recall that the TNT crew basically said that if it came down to T-Mac or Yao going that T-Mac would be the one who was traded.

um, if you watch the NBA long enough, what i said is not contradictory.

a perfect example involves our very own rockets. rockets v. knicks -> 2 defensive minded teams locked in a tight defensive battle. who won? we did. why? hakeem was the best individual offensive player on the court.

did we play great offense in that series? no, the knicks really slowed us down. but when the game is tight, we have a guy we can throw the ball in and he does his thing.

my point is, both teams couldn't run their offense as smoothly. b/c great team defense will do that to you. so we go to our bread and butter - hakeem the dream and let him take us home.

so when the playoffs rolls around, we're not going to run our offense as smoothly (like you want). we're going to depend on yao in the post making his shots or drawing doubles and kick out to open shooters, or tracy doing his thing. get that?

You might not remember this, but the Lakers had Shaq and Kobe for a few seasons before Jackson showed up and they still couldn't get anywhere. I don't expect you have any idea who Kurt Rambis is though.

As for the Kings versus the Lakers technically you have one motion offense playing another. Secondly the Kings only lost one series because of an infamous sequence where Mike Bibby fouled Kobe Bryant's elbow with his face.

As for who you want to trust with the ball for the final shot even the Lakers, who had Shaq and Kobe, did pretty well when they gave it up to Fisher and Horry. As a matter of fact there's one famous game where Horry nailed a 3 to win the game for the Lakers against the Kings after both Shaq and Kobe missed layups.

badgerfan, you seem knowledgable about basketball. Do you play it? Have you played organized ball? There's a reason the plays are called "sets". They only set up the offense. They dont' dictate what can happen. The defense can mess everything up. Plays get messed up all the time. It's up to the players to make the audibles out there, and thats where the great players step in.

Just like you said, they aren't robots. The offensive plays won't get ran to perfection all the time either.

Adelman has a lot of "sets" that get Yao the ball. He has a lot of "sets" that get T-Mac the ball. What happens thereafter is all dependent on how the defense treats him. That you cannot argue. If Yao has the ball in the post and no double comes Yao will shoot it or dunk it or lay it up. If the double comes, he has to pass it out and the ball has to either repost or swing. Either way, someone has to make an open shot. Yao's not good enough at passing to cutters while trying to hold post position.

If T-Mac is iso'd at the wing and no double coverage, he's going to drive it in or take the shot. If a double comes, he'll pass it out and swing it. Either way, someone's going to have to make the shot.

Yeah, don't worry about defense because defense doesn't win championships. Or does it?

Here's a guess: if the Rockets get to the playoffs Adelman isn't going to come into the locker room and tell the Rockets to forget about playing the system they've been perfecting all season.

lol, now i know you're talking without thinking. let me post you some youtube clips: decide whether they're kobe's individual greatness or the "triangle offense."

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/C7Lp5aQq4zI&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/C7Lp5aQq4zI&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

outside of the first play, tell me what part of the triangle offense was kobe running? he did everything else basically on his own my friend.

    let's go to another:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GBKLjgZOMCg&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GBKLjgZOMCg&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

wow, that was a perfect triangle offense right out of the time out right?

my point is: down the stretch, great players take over (make shots for themsleves or their teammates). rarely do you run your offense down the stretch. i could dig through a million more clips, but i think these 2 prove my point just fine.

lol, were you at this board last year when we went 11-0 without yao after he went down? . dude, are you new to this board?

um... do you know what yao means to this organization financially? yao will retire as a rocket.

The Rockets don't draw up any set plays. Instead they use what's called a "read and react" system.

Which is why i'm not opposed to giving Adelman a chance. However, look at what you're saying:

    Horry nailed the 3.

Yes...he was wide open for that 3 because Shaq was doubled IIRC. That attention to Shaq is because they went to Shaq and even if Shaq missed a layup, there's no way in hell you give him another shot at it.

That wasn't a result of motion offense.

Who would you want shooting to win the game: Shaq a layup or Horry a 3? Everytime it's Horry the 3. That's why he got the 3. The only thing is he made it. That's what makes Jackson's offense look so good. A made shot.

Do you not see the back screens that get Yao the ball? That's not a read and react system. That's a set and you know it.

Uh, do you even know what the triangle is?

Also, I'm still waiting on those links to media quotes suggesting Yao should be traded.

Again, the Rockets don't draw up any set plays. That's been widely reported in the media. It's read and react, meaning reading the defense and taking what it will give you.

i thought our offense was fine last year v. the jazz. we just were missing players (2 out of 5 starters in fact and 2 were hurting). so it's easy to key in on tracy last year. you can't expect to keep pace with a healthy deep team when you're not even 50%.

look, our system is simple (just has had the chron document the past few games--play off yao; when tracy gets back, they'll play off of him too). role players just gotta make their shots. we have better role players so i'm confident guys like brooks, artest, scola, landry will get theirs.

Good God no. He nailed that 3 because 1) Shaq missed a layup and 2) Kobe missed a layup and 3) Vlade Divac kind of had a mind fart about what to do with the ball. The two stars really came through big there.

The offense was terrible last year against Utah because there was no ball movement.

Again, do you really think that Adelman's going to come into the locker room and say "I know we've been playing the system all year, but now just forget about it"? That's incredibly stupid.

um yes, i have LP so i watch them all the time. and i lived in LA until 2 years ago and saw the lakers all the time. the triangle gets beaten to death.

ok here are a few links: (and i'm sure lots of links are closed off b/c it's been a year. jsut ask other members around here when even fans on this board and media make those stupid suggestions that we were better off without yao b/c we went 11-0 w/o him to start)

    1) http://blogs.chron.com/yaocentral/archives/2007/01/are_the_rockets_better_off_wit.html

    2) remember 1st and 10 when skip and everyone in that panel said we were better off without yao and this board got fired up. here's the link
    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=124388

i don't want to search for anymore. but now do you get why it's easy to say these things?

um... we lost our starting PG for 2.5 games of that series. we didn't have yao. and we were competitive in basically EVERY GAME. we played fine with what we had. we just didn't have enough bodies.

That's why I asked you if you play the game. You don't need media to tell you that's not a read-and-react offense. I know Adelman's read and react offense. The point is, why play to what the defense gives you when you can make the defense play to you?

I don't know if this will give me any merit but my friends are huge Kings fans and they remember Adelman's offense. They've seen Rockets' games without Yao, without Tracy, and with both. Nothing has come close to an Adelman offense in their minds. We're still running a hybrid that Adelman is tweaking, and that play is a set for sure man.

There will be open shots in any system. Whether you have superstars to create them or a fantastic offense that does. You just have to make them.

how long hae you watched the NBA man? kobe wasn't that good until the year phil got there. he wasn't the "2nd option" officially until that year. and kobe did admit phil made him grow up.

phil was more influential in terms of their maturity (until they won a fwe rings and got cocky) than how they played the games.

and how funny you brought up that shot? yea, they got that from the triangle offense

and there's a reason adelman hasn't won despite all his great talent. look at what adelman has been blessed with and JVG has been blessed with. both have one finals championship appearance.

you expect guys to "read and react" in the playoffs? when they're not as gifted as his kings' players? lol.

trust me, he'll be smart and give the ball to tracy and yao when tough times are here.

read and react is easy with the clippers and warriors. apparently it wasn't so even with a team like denver.
