ok, so when exactly was Luther Head playing the point, since you pointed out that he's been doing that lately.

The Seattle game....I didnt see it, but as soon as I got out of class, I turned it on the radio. Gene Peterson straight up said "Luther did a great job of running the team in the 4th quarter."

3 games ago and playing part of the 4th quarter as the point guard (i can't imagine for more than 5 minutes) hardly counts as "lately".

    Don't hate...Congratulate!

It get personal when you think he is an adequate coach. I wonder if he wins Coach of the Year, would you move him up to mediocre?

EDC, you are the best. I am just messing with you cuz you are smarter than me and I am envious.

    (1) Congratulations. I don't know what I am congratulating you for, as I honestly don't care whether you know Mr. Van Gundy or not. You seem to think it something of merit, so, whatever. It also doesn't change the fact that an anonymous poster is much more likely to heap praise (deserved, undeserved, or otherwise) upon a public figure because they know them.

    (2) Again, whatever. If you find it some sort of "personal insult" that someone disagrees with you, that is your problem.

Unlikely. Anything short of a monumental collapse by the Jazz and Sloan has that honor locked up.

Were Mr. Van Gundy to find a way to win the award though, he would be in very comparable company: Tom Nissalke and Don Chaney.

edc, who in the league do you think would produce drastically better results now and in the long term with the current roster? Which of these coaches are attainable?

so you are telling me that if van gundy finishes with a better record than the jazz after having yao out for a big chunk of the year then he won't win coach of the year?

secondly, who would you prefer the rockets get as coach? pry avery away from the mavs? get phil from the lakers? steal pop from san antonio? I can't imagine you would like pop anymore than JVG.

quit being a freaking troll and appreciate what van gundy is doing. we have the best defense in the league, we are 3rd in winning margin, and we have a chance to overtake san antonio ALL WITHOUT YAO!!!! van gundy is getting everything out of this team and you can't stop trolling.

No clue what "we" you are referring to? Are you in Almu's YMCA league?

Looking at the offensive side of the ball, the Houston Rockets are 22nd in PPG and 25th in FG%.

Honestly? That has alot to do with Rafer shooting 36% on 12 shots a game.

Uh-huh. Amazing how teams coached by Mr. Van Gundy always end up in the bottom half of the league offensively.

Dont mean to double post but...
Rafer shoots 36.7% on 13.0 shots a game (taken from the yahoo sports profile, I don't think it includes tonight's game in the stats).

The Rockets are 22nd in PPG at 96.23 PPG, and 25th in FG% at .445 (from NBA.com).

According to ESPN, the Rockets attempt 79.3 FG per game, 17th in the league while making 35.3 a game, which is 24th in the league.

Now let's see how Rafer's shot affects our percentages - 13 shots at 36.7% equates to 4.77 FGM per game.
The rest of the team shoots at

(35.3 - 4.77) / (79.3-13.0) = 46.0%. That would put us at 14th, right behind Dallas in the FG% category. Hardly "devastatingly inefficient".

What we *DO* need to do better is inside scoring. We're currently dead last in FTA/game in the league, which has alot to do with our drive-n-kick game and extensive reliance on the 3pointer.

This is backed up by ESPN.com's 'adjusted FG% stat', which shows us at 11th.

We're 15th in points per possession, which is really all that matters as far as offense goes.

We're also 1st in limiting points allowed per possession, and 4th in point differential.

They also have the 5th best record, which is the only thing that matters.

Yeah... so this Thread is NEGATIVE - i wish we could lock it up.... JVG is an outstanding coach look at our record, and our defense.. this team has the identity of a defensive minded team .. if it wasent for this defesne we wouldnt have as all these blow outs this season... and as for our homecourt advantage if it wasent for JVG, we wouldnt have the red rowdies.. dont know any other coach that has done this... and by the way without Yao, what our record (31-17) thats close to Utah AAND San Antonio

Congrats Coach... you are doing a hell of a job

And I don't know what the hell that's supposed to mean. Rockets don't score a lot because they play at a relatively slow pace, and they don't have a high FG% because they shoot a bunch of threes. This is why PPG and FG% are crappy indicators of offensive potency.
