Much cheaper than my proposed extension.

    Altuve should now fire Boras.

Helluva deal for the Astros. Glad they could get something done during their exclusive negotiating window.

Still surprised the Altuve camp didn’t want the next two years bought out at a higher rate.

Im sure Altuve had a lot of say in this negotiation and he wanted to stay here long term. Altuve never struck anybody as a "get me the most money" type of guy. Im sure were all happy it worked out for everybody.

Congrats to Jose - already an amazing story and an Astros legend.

Does this mean we can finally turn the page on Carlos Lee?

Moustakas must have really scared Boras or Altuve. Astros big win in both Cole trade and Altuve deal.

Like I said in the other thread... this off-season's contract issues just seemed a little too "dug in" to be a fad.

Teams are going to offer/sign deals that pay deserving players what they're worth now... but not simply for past performance.

There's also no longer going to be non-contending teams that make a big signing to appease the fan base... which will limit the overall marketplace.

Lastly, even big market/money teams will put themselves in position to avoid the luxury tax.

All the while, labor unrest may be an inevitability... the owners have full control over the marketplace for the first time in league history.

Man Can’t believe Scott Boras caved and agreed to an extension. This offseason has really taught him a lesson.

Also don’t get the people adding in the current club options to his new extension. The next two years are guaranteed. No matter what the Astros get a bargain for these years. The 5-150 is not That much of a bargain. The Astros are taking on a lot of risk given how recent star level 2nd baseman have aged. At 2 years away no less. It’s a fair deal and one where the Astros underpaid him a bit. But even if Altuve ages gracefully he will not be dramatically outperforming his contract.

Still love it though overall cause nice to see another Astros lifer potentially.

Altuve must not have felt insulted by the Astros' offer.

Altuve took this deal and gives us hope to retain some of his compadres. Hopefully, everyone gets paid and doesn't get greedy. We could have one of the all-time great dynasties (knock on wood).

More than a little shocked that this is all it took. I figured 8/200 (including redoing the first 2 years) would be the likely number needed to get it done. Instead he gets basically 7/164. He will hit free agency at 34, which is certainly at a danger age, but it's not geriatric so still a little earning potential. Security obviously played a huge role, while he probably could have commanded a larger contract outright in 2 years, a hell of a lot can happen. He gets to stay on a good team in an easy to please market. He would have had huge expectations if he took a huge deal elsewhere, he's basically a made man in Houston.

Spectacular deal for the Astros. We obviously assume some risk given that we still had him controlled for 2 years, but to retain a player of his caliber long term without having to assume virtually any risk years (he will be 33 when his last season starts). At that age his future contract demands will be far from crazy, so I think this creates the very real potential for him to be an Astro for life.

Truly thrilled to have him locked up. To have basically followed his career since he first started making waves in A-ball, through all the losing (and my own personal doubts about his potential) to the very top of the mountain makes this all the more rewarding as a fan. Crazy to imagine when he was rejected at camp all those years ago that it would come to this.

And I hope this puts to bed any nonsense about Crane being cheap and not willing to spend. We could have very easily just let these 2 years play out and made a courtesy offer, but this regime in it for the long haul.

We will lose some guys, and we will never be up there with the Yankees and Dodgers, but they will pragmatically spend money.

Exactly. I believe Crane when he says top 5 payroll. Astros are turning into a juggernaut. Yeah, we might lose a Springer and a Keuchel but look at what we have in the minors?

If we maximize these guys potential, increase revenue, etc etc... maybe it is possible to go past the 200 million dollar threshold (IF WE NEED TOO).

This all feels like a dream, look what all Astros fans have been through since our conception. Now we could be something great and remembered...

Top 5 payroll is not that far away - it's not like there's a huge amount of added payroll to get there. Astros are already #10. If Altuve's $30MM/yr were already in effect, we'd be at #4 right now.

Still strange that the pro-Astros camp was against offering him an extension earlier this week... or I guess pessimistic that he'd actually accept any sort of offer that bought out his prime years.

30 million/year is nothing to scoff at... just the 2nd position player to command that. Exactly what I was stressing (dollar/year to be more important for players now than overall length of deal). I know we off-set that by including these 2 years of ultra-cheap cost, but like you said... they didn't have to do anything now, so technically you don't have to include that as part of the "extension".

If anything, that previous contract continues to provide its brilliance... the steal of the century.
