Only to those that just looked at raw stats and end evaluations there. If you watched the plays each player enabled his team to make and considered their impact on their team's wins and losses--VY was the deservedly runaway winner, as acknowledged by almost all semi objective media and players. By VY's 3rd game Tenn's offense went from anemic/worst in the league, to mediocre, with ability to occasionally make big plays. Though anyone who brings up Shaun King with VY can hardly be taken seriously (you could at least compare folks with more comparable pedigree and physical tools--McNabb, McNair, Alex Smith, Culppper, Vick, etc), I'll address what you said. In addition to their impotent offense pre-VY, Tennesse had a bad defense last year--dead last in yards and next to last in points given up. Pretty much the worst defense in the league, hardly "stifiling". The play of VY by his 3rd start and special teams turned Tennesse from the worst team in the league to medicore/competitive. VY was a major part of the turn around, maybe THE major part, but certainly a major part. Without him yes they lose easily 4 games they needed up winning. This year the defense has played much better, though hardly stifling as well. 11th in points and 7th in yards, and it has noticably been pounded the last 5 weeks, givening up nearly 28PPG against largely medicore offenses. Nonetheless, I would say this year the defense gets the bulk of the credit for most Ws overall this year and keeping them with a winning record. Last year was a different story. Calling spades spades here.
Thats why I said the comparison was not of each one's abilities(said myself that Young was faster and had a better arm) but the fact that the team won many games once they took over and the QB did not have a whole lot to do with it(though to be fair, Young had more big plays to help the team win). Edit: I also remember it being said that Shaun King inspired those around him and made them better. Perhaps for a stretch of games they rallied around the rookie QB being thrown into the fire(possible the same thing happened in Tenn)?? We dont know whats going on inside the heads of the players, only what they say. And what they said about King(the players around him) was similar to some of the things the Titans players said about VY. Those others you mentioned didnt have the team start performing better when they entered the lineup so the point I was making would be lost on them. I guess another would be Trent Dilfer with the 2000 Ravens. They would have won the Super Bowl with any QB that has the subtitle of "manager of the game". I likened Vince to Randall Cunningham when he was with Buddy Ryan. His defense and special teams was so good back then that he told Randall to just make a couple plays and we'll win the game. Back then Cunningham was not as prolific a thrower as he showed later in Minnesota. He made a lot of plays with his legs.
I'm curious as to what happened to all the "VY the Great!" threads. Oh where, oh where has my UT fan gone? Oh where, oh where can he be? With his tail tucked in to his little tight arse, You might need some KY (re. VY) (is there a difference?) jelly.
King-Young is just the silliest comparison ever. But glad to see to see you reflected enough to realize the OROY must have made a couple of big plays to help the team win. I see FFB is still smarting from all those a*s beatings VY and Co put on his teams. Scoreboard, over and over and over and over again, is a b****, ain’t it.
From Houston Press: Broncos vs. Texans: An Open Letter to Mario Williams Dear Mario, I was wrong. For nearly 20 months, I have cursed, chided and ridiculed you. I mistakenly believed you represented everything rancid about the ignominious Texans franchise. But—slowly, very slowly—I’ve come to find out you actually represent its greatest hope. I still recall the day I found out you—and not Reggie Bush—were coming to town. “Crushed” doesn’t even begin to describe the depths of my sorrow. Fortunately, my grief didn’t last long. Unfortunately, it was instantly replaced with rage. I’m going to be honest with you. I wanted Reggie. Big time. I hadn’t desperately desired anyone like that since I was a junior high kid watching Alyssa Milano on “Who’s the Boss?” for the first time. He was to be the team’s first true face of the franchise. He was going to help David Carr finally fulfill all that untapped potential. He was going to be our Earl Campbell. I couldn’t wait to watch those breathtaking, impossible runs. Hell, I couldn’t wait to use him on Madden. So, yeah, you could say I was pissed when I heard the news. All those hopes and dreams formed during a 2005 season spent cheering every Texans loss were dismissively flushed down the toilet that Black Friday. Management obviously didn’t care. They didn’t care about me, or any of the other fans out there desperately pining for Reggie or Vince. Our face of the franchise, our people’s champ, our chosen one… gone. And in his place, we got you; some out-of-nowhere, questionable motor, combine freak equipped with none of the flair, charisma or credentials of our dynamic duo. Understand, I didn’t blame you as much as I blamed the Texans brass. Up to that point, they’d infamously made one mistake after another, so—in my mind--choosing you was just the coup de grâce. I’m not going to lie to you; a big part of my inner fan died that day. And since the Texans were the last remaining team I actually semi-cared about, that hurt; probably even more than I’d like to admit. And as long as I’m being perfectly honest here, watching you get blocked one-on-one by wide receivers and tight ends on a regular basis didn’t exactly ease my pain. But six weeks ago, something started to change: For you, and for me. All of a sudden, those all too sporadic flashes of potential morphed into consistency. Plays were being made and a steady stream of sacks were rolling in. And—not surprisingly--for the first time since your arrival, it looked like you were actually having fun out there. Then last night happened. 3 ½ sacks. A hula dance. And a Reliant Stadium crowd justifiably chanting your name with gusto. You’ll be going to the Pro Bowl now for sure. God knows you deserve it simply based on overcoming everything I—and people like me—threw your way from the beginning. Unlike my buddy Peter King, I’m not ready to declare you the “right” pick just yet. There are still far too many years, twists and turns to come. Things change fast in the NFL, and I believe Vince and Reggie are going to enjoy plenty of stellar days, too. But I can unequivocally say you weren’t a dumb pick. Far from it, in fact. And for perhaps the first time, I can honestly say I can’t wait to see what you do next, and I’m glad it will be taking place in a Texans’ uniform. Finally, don’t get too mad at me if I happen to hedge on some of the feelings expressed in this letter every once in awhile. It’s bound to happen. But if you promise to keep working hard, I promise I’ll continue keeping the faith. So thank you, Mario. Thanks for a great year, a prime time performance, and for not holding a grudge despite my boorish behavior and inhospitable welcome. You know this isn’t easy for me to do, but I’ve finally mustered the courage to say it: I was wrong about you, Mario. And I’ve never been happier about it. Sincerely, Jason Friedman http://blogs.houstonpress.com/ballz/2007/12/broncos_vs_texans_an_open_lett.php
This went by un-noticed. Jerome Solomon posted this a few days ago on the Chronicle (underlined emphasis mine) http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/solomon/5378111.html I'm more and more impressed with the kid. This blew me away about how heady he is starting to get with studying and reading offenses. Seems like along with everything else it's making a difference. I'm impressed that he's really developing the cerebral side of his game as well!
You know it's possible to be a UT fan and to not be a VY fan any longer. I don't wish any ill will or anything and I'm greatful for the national championship, but I'm a Texans fan first and foremost. You're really not in a position to make fun of other schools right now.
I remember when we drafted Mario Williams I was pissed off as hell. I didn't know why we didn't draft Bushie or Vincy. Then after the first season after we waived car, it didn't really make sense. Me and my friends would have debates on Mario William and my friend defending Mario saying his foot was hurt that year and that's why he couldn't perform. But after watching Thursday's game This was like the first time I was pumped up seeing Mario Williams play. Bush hasn't seem to get far with his run and Vince Young, I havn't seen much of him play so I can't really say. Our defensive line just seems to get paid a lot. The texans need to pick up another good corner back. I think bennet is doing pretty good but please don't put in Faggins. His man owns Faggins whoever it may be. You sit there watching the texans game saying F ** kin Faggins.
Well, Bush is having his 2nd great game in the last 2 weeks. So far today, he has 19 carries for 86 yards (4.5 yd average) and 2 TD's. He also has 6 catches for 46 yards. He sure would have looked great in a Texan uniform. That's a game breaking double-threat if I've ever seen one. EDIT: I'm sorry, that was Aaron Stecker, not Reggie Bush...
Which brings up an interesting point for Bush apologists, who say that the offensive line wasn't opening enough holes for him. Apparently, they were opening enough holes for Stecker...
There's a good reason why I don't read Justice and McClain anymore. They lost all credibility with me a long time ago, and I just can't bring myself to believe anything they write. I honestly can't. I'm not going to waste my time reading crap that I don't believe. I guess that "Richard Justice, Writer of Wrongs" label really does stick.
The craziest thing in the sports areb draft/recruiting grades. neithr is corect o even jsified. look at the texans grades then and look at the plyers performing. Ryans, williams, daniels, and winston are a starters playing well. If you can draft and pull 4 quality starters out of a draft class, u will be good for a long time. This year they got Okoye and Bennett as starters. Thats 6 starters in to draft classes with spencer and jones as possible starters.
I'd like to see Mario have a great year next season then I can say to myself yeah we got the 1rst pick right.
Good news, Patrick Kerney had ZERO sacks today. So after this week, Mario is still only .5 sacks away from the NFL leader in sacks. Problem...it will be hard to get to Manning.
Reggie decoyed Stecker into a productive day. When Reggie isn't getting the ball, even if it is because he is on the sideline, he can operate as a decoy, which is when he is most useful. Even Pete Carroll understood that.
the texans have done really well in the draft the last two years. I hate to keep piling on casserly, but gone are the days of dave ragone.
