Just googled it. It was February 2000 on this one: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/archive/index.php/t-13102.html But I posted it on the football site in 98. I don't care. I'm syked that my idea went through!
So they decided to go against their potential audience and pick something they didn't like? Faos, why are you upset, you're not a soccer fan? Oh and Fatty, nice going. You can give me some thanks since I voted for it.
this should be in the HANGOUT. No way it's a "texans, astros, comets" thread. Yes, we MEXICANS are hungover the 1836 crap, but we still took your stewpId ALAMO. Cry me a river... this 1836 is going to get so FREAKIN' confusing for most of us MEXICANS. I request a MERGE, please.
In an interview Oliver Luck said it was one of the more popular choices, but since the public can't see the results that really can't be confirmed. There was a poll on bigsoccer.com about the options and 1836 was the clear favorite there though. http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=282715
I don't think "Mexicans" will be offended, this is not meant to remind them of anything, it's meant to celebrate this state's heritage/history.
Hopefully the official name will be FC Houston 1836. It's really not unusual when you look at European team names, like Schalke 04 or Bayer 04 Leverkusen, named after the team founding years (1904). At least it's not an EXXXTREME AMERICAN SPORTS name like Earthquakes or something of the sort
I'm a little shocked by the negative reaction here. How could any self-respecting Texan and/or Houstonian NOT know the significance of 1836? And as someone else pointed out above, with the 49er's in SF and the 76er's in Philly, why is this such an odd and/or horrible name for the team? Its not like we're trying to set some new risky trend here. At any rate, go 'Sixers! I'm stoked.
I like it. At least it's better than "Real Salt Lake." Hey, morons: most of you speak English. Why mimic a La Liga naming device?
Houston 1836 is a fantastic name. 1836 is NOT a "nickname" like Astros or Rockets, as some people seem to think. It's not a WNBA team with a singular nickname or anything like that. So it's not "the Houston 1836," it's just Houston 1836. Frankly, they couldn't have done better.
i don't like or watch soccer but i think the name is badass. i'll probably go to the very first game just to say i went.
Oh, boooooooo, yourself.. Btw, what's with the people that dissapprove of "Houston 1836".. and boost the name "FC Houston"..? Wth is that? Must we have "Football Club" next to the city's name to KNOW it's a football(soccer) club..? Must be the same people that voted for "Houston Texans"
I like it better than The Texans. I like it and the logo. Kudos to them for being original and ballsy unlike the unimaginitive, always safe and prudent Texans with the most boring name ever. The 1836. I love it!
