MLS team to be called Houston 1836 http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/soc/3609485.html Jan. 24, 2006, 9:28PM MLS team to be called Houston 1836 By BERNARDO FALLAS Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle The Bayou City’s Major League Soccer franchise – which starting today will be known as Houston 1836 – was supposed to present its new name and logo Wednesday. But the unveiling ceremony has now turned into a simple formality. League officials declined comment today after the name and logo were posted to the bigsoccer.com web site following an apparent breach of the MLS web site. “An official announcement of the logo and the team name will be made Wednesday,” MLS senior vice president of marketing and communications Dan Courtemanche said today. The name was a popular choice among a list of 13 candidates released as part of a naming contest that ended Jan. 6. It signifies, among other Texas historical, dates, the year the city of Houston was founded. Houston franchise officials would not comment on the team name or logo. The unveiling ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lanier Middle School (2600 Woodnead) auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. ======================= Thanks a lot, Santa Anna...
It was pretty much known that was going to be the name for the last week. I, myself voted for a different name. I didn't like that since the first time I heard it. But now I guess It'll have to grow on me.
Being discussed here: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=107773&z=1 I love the name, at least we're sticking to traditional futbol club names.
WRONG, F*CK*NG section forum... Texans, Astros, Comets ???? C'mon, get with the program, KAMster. LOL
And I, the great Fatty, came up with the name in 98. I even told Watson's niece, who passed it along, as well as it getting kudos on the NFL naming site, as well as here. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/archive/index.php/t-13102.html
Check out the sweet LOGO of Sam Houston. I took a picture of old Sam a few weeks ago, and now I find him on the logo: And don't be punking my post in that other thread... jk
What's with the wannabe uber deutscheland sounding name What was wrong with Tejanos? was it taken? Even though I'll root for them, I will not be pleased at calling them the 36'ers or whatever they decide for a unofficial nickname. This is almost as bad as the previous Rockets jersey's I say we vote right here for their unofficial nickname, kind of like the Montreal Canadiens being the Habs or the Dallas Mavs being the Floppers. My vote is for Tejanos, to go with the "other" futbol team Houston has.
Yeah it reminds me of München von 1860 or maybe Schalke 04. The difference is that I believe those were the years the two clubs were founded, whereas ours is when the city of Houston was founded.
wow.... could soccer be any more ****ing gay than it is now? not only is soccer not a sport, but we're called the Houston 1836's? Christ... lol
Historical reference is a quite good identifier in the big picture. This gives the city and the team an older, vintage, longevity feel. I think it is great. Congrats Fatty Fat, too.
