Are there any rumors to a fix for the surround sound?

    Chromecast w/o router?

Can I use my Android phone and Chromecast app to stream video directly from the phone to the Chromecast without going through a router?

This. It's the only thing that kept me from getting one. I already have a logitech revue. Just want one for the caste feature.

But if the sound still sucks....

Unfortunately not. When you stream through the Chrome web browser it actually encodes using your PC, requiring the CPU cycles of that PC. The video goes through your actual PC so it needs to be a good CPU.
When you use the Netflix, YouTube, and now Hulu Plus apps, it streams directly from those sites and your phone is truly just the remote. No video goes through your phone at that point and thus doesn't matter how fast your CPU is.

Thanks for the response. I guess I'll need to get my wifi network working first at the location I want to use the Chromecast.

Maybe I misunderstood. I thought he was asking if you can cast a non-YouTube, NetFlix, Hulu video. Like a divx file or a YouPorn.com stream.

I was just curious if I had to have a wifi network setup via router in order to cast video (i.e., Youtube, NetFlix, Hulu) from my Android phone to the Chromecast device. It sounds like I need to have a wifi network setup first.

Yes, that is correct. I believe when you first plug it in it will create it's own little mini-wifi network so your phone can talk to it and configure it. Then it will switch over to your main wifi so that it can actually get on the Internet.

I'm considering selling mine as it hasn't gotten much use since I got XBMC up and running. Not 100% though as my wife and kid still enjoy the simplicity of it.

Try Plex. You will be forever happy.

Much better setup compared to XBMC

Isn't that more of a home server based setup? With XBMC I can stream pretty much anything right to the front end from the internet.

Plex has a Media Center (front end) that does basically the exact same thing as XBMC. The server part of it allows you to serve up local files to the Media Center as well as any remote apps running plex.

I also recommend Plex. Very easy and convenient. I use it with Google TV and my tablet often to watch media.

Just got mine. Hooked it up on a TV without cable TV and I'm now streaming the Cardinals game from my laptop through TBS to my TV. This thing ROCKS!
