Right, but still 80% of Republicans and close to 70% Democrats supported the Civil Rights Act Bill, so unless there were only a handful of conservatives in Congress at that time, I doubt that full credit can be given to Liberals on that one. It was mutually supported.

Uhh...you really won't find a more definitionally liberal, less conservative cause than the use of federal power to dismantle extralegal race-based institutions in the South in the 50's and 60's.

Partisan alignment doesn't really mean anything to this calculus.

As has been pointed out numerous times, and as is obvious to pretty much anybody with a passing familiarity of the history of the era, that was in a time where there were actual liberal northern republicans and conservative southern democrats, and this very issue caused the realignment of such along partisan lines.

True enough. I would have to say I believe that the only opposition to the CRA came from conservatives, though it is only right to be fair (echoing your point) by saying that there were also plenty of conservatives who realized they were on the wrong side of history on that issue and as such, supported the CRA.

I won't even be voting for Obama this year, which is one reason that being labeled "liberal" by texx caused nothing more than a *snicker* from me. If I were forced to register with a party, it would be Libertarian.
