A forth round pick for a DeMeco Ryans. Damn thats hard to swallow. The guy is a probowler. We couldn't get a at least a second rounder for him. I know he doesn't fit that well in our defense but damn. Rick Smith makes Morey look like Jesus.
Im slowly feeling like the Texans have peeked and are headed down to mediocrity next season. Last season was are chance to win the championship.
seems like niehte rof those guys were KEY contributors to the best defense in texans history... mario being IR'd in week 5 and ryans only being a 2-down backer.. he already has, cush was the qb on the field last year tasking over the mic/com helmet from demeco early in the season.. Okay after losing Winston, Briesel, Dreesen, Mario, and Ryans we still don't have some cap room there is something wrong. Briesel, Dreesen, & Mario were FAs. losing them did nothing to the cap.. their salaries were already off the books.. look for the texans to extend brown ASAP..
Smith and Watt on the Ryans trade: <iframe title="VideoBam video player" type="text/html" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" width="480" height="325" src="http://videobam.com/widget/esiWp/2" allowFullScreen></iframe>
this has absolutely has to be a move to extend barwin and brown during this season and not letting them get into free agency otherwise get yourself new accounting people. This still hurts me more after I woke up today, maybe because I own a #59 jersey. just an ugly move. the eagles got a probowler.
People act like we're losing Pro-Bowler DeMeco Ryans. We're losing the shadow of that guy. His 46 tackles are just very replaceable, given that he came off the field in passing situations and he didn't make tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He was about the 7th or 8th most important guy on the Texans' defense last year, and that's just not worth $8 mil a season. A great trade. I hope for the best for Ryans in Philly, he's a class act and I hope he can produce like he used to. I don't think he's the same player he used to be, but I hope he proves me wrong.
Agree 100%. He was a shell of himself last year. I know he is coming off a serious injury but he wasn't worth the money he was making. He played in only 55% of the defensive plays last year. I think he does well in Philly cause he seems to be a natural 4-3 middle linbacker but this was a good trade for the Texans in my opinion.
Even outside of whether or not you think Demeco was an average player or still really good, people need to think of this in terms of the team choosing between Demeco Ryans or Duane Brown. I'm convinced this trade was all about freeing up space to sign our FAs next year. If they can get Brown and Barwin locked up to long term extensions THIS offseason instead of having to wait until next, it will absolutely be worth it. I have a feeling after this next season that Barwin's price tag is going to go up significantly, since he will likely have another 10+ sack year. Get him signed now, and maybe you save some money long term.
Like most people, I hate to see him go because of everything he's been for the franchise. At the same time though, good teams have to make tough decisions and I'm glad we were able to get something for him rather than just cutting him. With trades being pretty rare in the NFL compared to the other sports, I think Rick Smith did a good job in getting something in return. My only beef with losing guys like DeMeco, Winston, and to a lesser extent Vickers and probably Dreesen...is that Jacoby freaking Jones is still on the team.
What are the Texans doing? Terrible offseason for a team who is going to start the season with a weaker team than it had last season.. Aren't you supposed to do the contrary?
Looks like it's confirmed (by Pancakes, so take it for what it's worth). We got Tampa's 4th rounder, which is the 4th pick. Not too shabby, definitely better than getting philly's pick. On my phone, so it's hard to post links. This is from a chronicle article. I know, I know, old news to most of you. Pugs
Demeco's contract was what was most responsible for throwing us into cap hell in the first place. These guys whine about not getting paid (Owen Daniels ESPECIALLY has no room for beef) and then whine when their favorite overpaid teammate gets traded? You can't have it both ways, guys. Don't demand a giant albatross contract and you won't get shown the door so soon. It was bad timing for Demeco. Lands a giant contract, career threatening injury, then a switch to a system he doesn't fit in. Loyalty has nothing to do with it. They did him a solid by sending him to a contender where he will start in a system that benefits him. As much praise as the class of '06 gets, our most significant contributors in our only playoff run turned out to be nobody from that draft class. Cushing, Schaub/Yates, Jonathan Joseph, JJ Watt, Daniel Manning, Antonio Smith, Arian Foster, Ben Tate, Andre Johnson, Duane Brown, Chris Meyers... I'm kind of glad to be moving on from that draft, frankly. If Graham/Casey/Dreessen can replace Owen Daniels, I'm all for that, too.
Instead of pick 85 (I believe) we jumped up to pick 73 (I believe). I was trying to drive around idiots on the freeway and listen at the same time. I could be off by a close few. Loved Demeco, he started to really play well at the end of last season, but this D really wasn't a fit for him, plus as this has become a pass happy league he only plays two downs. Not worth the salary if this means we're trying to free up money to sign BROWN, Barwin and Shaub next year. This could get really ugly next year. Then in 2014 Cushing is up.
I was thinking the same thing this morning: Callers on the radio are talking about getting rid of the "face of the franchise" with Ryans and Winston...when, other than last year, they were really just good players on mediocre teams. It's not like those two guys were the catalysts to our best season ever. Contributors, sure...but not catalysts. Again...tough decisions, but decisions that had to be made nonetheless.
