And just who is this "Mutumbo mold" player you're referring to? And how is he available to us for $3 yr/~$7 mil that we paid Anderson?

I reckon if T-mac and Yao were healthy this season it would not have been hard for us to attract a Antonio Mcdyess/Kurt Thomas/Rasheed Wallace type player for that price

If Chuck Hayes was 5 inches taller, he'd probably be fantastic. He's not - which is why we're having this conversation...

The point is that Anderson wasn't plan A - Marcin Gortat was. He was the "best available" at arond $3-4million per year. When that didn't pan out, Anderson was the next best target.

I dunno about you, but thoughts of signing Johan Petro didn't give me goosebumps? Francisco Elson? Anderson might end up being worse than those guys, but they don't bring anything different to the table. Anderson does - couple of offensive looks, and a nice jumper.

And his lack of defence isn't THAT big a deal - there's plenty of teams out there who can't put 2 "scoring bigs" on at the same time - Anderson gets the easier cover in his minutes.

I think Aussie Rocket is right, and thats because I'm also Australian.

This is one of the weakest arguments I've ever read

    Huh!?

You're saying Mcdyess and Rasheed would both forgo full MLE money with teams better than us even when healthy(Spurs and Celtics respectively), in order to sign with us for basically half the money? If you can do that, you need to stop posting and try to land yourself a GM job in the NBA.

As for Kurt Thomas, the man's freaking 37. And averaged 4ppg/5rpg last season.

    truth

fans severely overrating the recruiting pull that a perennially injured yao + tmac duo have. either name other available centers that are actually obtainable and would be a better fit for the rockets, or stop complaining.

I hope David Andersen turns out okay.

I still see people making odd comments that just don't make sense to me. Somehow people want to separate Offense from defense and rebounding - you can't, it's all part of the game. It doesn't matter that you can score if you are getting consistently scored on and beat out for the rebounds.

It is preferred that you give the team a net+ when you're on the court. A guy like Chuck is so great at defense/rebounding that it makes up for his lack of offense (especially sense only one person can score the ball at a time). Hopefully Andersen doesn't turn out like Novak (not making a comparison in their game but more the lack of contributing to a team outside of shooting which results in a net loss for the team).

EDIT: ...and before anyone starts discussing +/-, I mean net+ as in players should add something to the game not the net+ where the team happened to do well when he was on the court regardless of if he contributed to it or not.

i don't agree with that at all. first, i'm a huge chuckwagon supporter, so let's get that out of the way. but if you look at things individually, chuck's so bad on offense that it doesn't matter how good he defends, he'll always get scored on more than he can contribute on offense.

so, my point is that chuck and andersen are in quite similar situations. both can only be effective for a team when they are surrounded by the right players. chuck needs guys who can make up for his offensive inabilities. andersen, right now, needs players that can make up for his defensive struggles. but both situations can work out for a team. it's up to the coach to make it work.

the difference between chuck and andersen is, though, that chuck will always be horrible at scoring points but there's hope that andersen will adjust to the nba (probably not before the all star game, though) in a way that he can be more than a situational player.

remember, it took scola half a season to become a starter and it was well into his 2nd season when you could finally say that he really had adjusted to the nba game.

It would be nice if Hakeem Olajuwon worked with Anderson on his moves. I still think he has more potential regarding his moves and footwork. He may be slow but so is Pau Gasol. I think Olajuwon would benefit this guy a lot if not even Dawson.

Predicting that members of this board will criticize a new player is like predicting the sun will come up tomorrow

I'm not saying they would, but I would rather have a veteran like that. And yes I am seriously suggesting Kurt Thomas averaging 4ppg and 5 rpg is better than Anderson. Heck even a Reggie Evans would be better. Don't you guys get it? All the naysayers on Anderson are all Australian, we've seen him. The bloke can't even make it off the bench for the Australian team in real games. His good but his not a NBA player and I'm pretty sure thats the point. Certainly not a $2-$3 Mil player. $1 Million maybe

Maybe he pans out maybe he doesn't. But to say he won't after one preseason game is ridiculous. I don't care if all aussies think he will be a bust or not. I respect your opinions but that doesn't mean what you say will happen. Give the guy time to learn the system and the NBA game.
I saw a guy get off to a horrible start in game one but start to play better
with more minutes. Game two another slow start, but that is to be expected.DA got important minutes late and hit three clutch shots and had a block. Preseason or not DA came through last night when it mattered most.
I'm not saying he will be an important part of the rotation this season, but I could see him being productive from the high post and his ability to hit the jumper. Don't write him off so early

I'm not writing him off based on one pre season game and I don't think Aussie Rocket is either.

I'm writing him off before he ever became a Rocket.

This board is crazy. This is a thirteen page thread arguing about a nobody rookie center's performance in a preseason game.

    You gotta love it. :)

Well you can love it sometimes, but sometimes it just gets old. Luckily this isn't one of those times. :)
