What makes this even more hypocritical and sad was that during the summer DeSantis was saying that vaccines were safe and encouraging peopel to take them.

Now that Trump has come out for vaccination he has to try to appeal to that part of the GOP base that is against vaccination.

 

DeSantis going further to the right, helps Trump IMO.

The infection rates in California and Florida are identical:



The fact that infection rates are identical already tells you that mask mandates in California (including school mask mandates (even outdoors!!!!!), lockdowns, etc. have made **** all of a difference.

Let's look at the different age structures of the two states:

21.3 % of Floridians are age 65 and up (2nd highest in the nation)
15.2 % of Californians are age 65 and up (45th highest/6th lowest in the nation)

Now, let's look at risk of dying from Covid by age.

So the risk of dying from Covid is hundreds of times higher from age 75 and up.

So, with identical infection rates, if you have a population where the percentage of people in that age group is much higher, you would expect to have higher death rates. It's simple math.

Conclusion: Age-adjusted, Florida has a very similar - almost identical - death rate to California.

Pointing out higher death rates in Florida is a disingenuous gotcha game played for political reasons - it is absolutely expected that death rates would be higher if you have a significantly older population.

The only proof for any of the measures - mask mandates, lockdowns, etc. even working at all would be if infection rates were lower because of them. But they are not.

Once you have the same infection rate, states with more people 70+ are expected to have higher death rates. Prove me wrong. @B-Bob, you are a scientist, right? Am I mathematically correct here or not?

(By the way, this doesn't even take into account what we have been seeing in Europe: At least half of the people counted as "Covid deaths" in statistics in Germany, for instance, died with Covid, but not of Covid. Newsflash: Old people die.)

Now, all that said, if I have an older population, would I recommend the booster especially to those older people? Yes, and I would say it is bad to discourage them from taking it, because if anyone could presumably benefit from the booster, it's them. The vaccines don't prevent transmission, as we have learned. But they do seem to prevent a good percentage of cases from becoming serious/life-threatening.

And even if you were concerned about potential long-term effects...if you are already old...just take it. Because chances are, if you don't take it, you might have to worry less about "long term"...

Not only did I not avoid it, I directly addressed it extensively and quoted several replies to it - as you surely have seen in the other thread.

Also, what in the world are "COVID-19 supporters" Have you totally lost your mind?

The guy is clearly a vaccination evangelist, which is fine. But in his quest to do that job, he is being disingenuous by only mentioning the massive disparity in percentage of 65+ aged people in the respective populations as an afterthought, when he very well knows that it is by far statistically THE biggest risk factor for death from Covid.

Now, do you acknowledge that at all? Or are you so entrenched in your idea of partisan politics that you cannot even do that?

Please prove me wrong on my previous post or acknowledge that age is the most important risk factor for death from Covid.

Do you have any comment on infection rates being exactly the same in Florida and California, despite one state having had lockdowns and mask mandates, while the other one didn't have them?

And by belittling his position as a "vaccination evangelist", apparently your are a vaccination opponent.

re: infection rates (and mind you, I don't live in CA) are driven by more than government response to COVID. Population differences including density, population makeup, travel in and out of states, are also factors in COVID-19 infection rates.

I think ALL states need to do a better job combatting COVID-19 (especially hospitalization and deaths). But FL stands out for a governor that has argued against COVID-19 response. And his state currently is #2 in active cases (after NY), #8 in total cases per 1M, #19 in deaths per 1M (just under 3,200). But again, he has from the start politicized the response, so he earns criticism.

 

But California had many more tourists than Florida in 2021. How is that possible?
