Glass blowing, golf, scuba diving, and wine tasting. (Unfortunately underwater basket-weaving is no longer taught at the U ). I'm taking Evlution of Jazz this semester and Evolution of Rock next.
Isabel, I have a minor in science (16 hours of chemistry and 8 hours of physics). At one time, I was actually a double major in math and chemistry. But I really really detested the chemistry labs, thus the reason for not majoring in it. I remember after getting a B in the 1st Organic, dropping the 2nd semester of it in favor of Biochemistry. Silly me thought that bio would be easier - it wasn't. twhy, Donne is okay but for some reason I really like the style of Keats and Shelley. I just wished that back when I was 18 to 20 years old, I enjoyed writing essays and papers because I probably would have majored in either English or history. It's funny how when you get older, you appreciate liberal arts more than when you were younger - at least that is the way it is with me.
OK, guys... do not take Biochemistry until you have had both semesters of Organic. Your biochemistry studies will go much more smoothly if you're already familiar with carbohydrate structures and know what an "ester" is. Also, you learn more about aromatic structures and amines, and you just get more practice and become more comfortable with the whole thing. (yes, I thought the entire BBS should know that ) I hate physics... and I don't blame anyone for not liking labs. My first semester of college, I used to think the best part of the week was when I got out of lab, because that meant it was over and I appreciated everything that was not in the lab so much more. My other favorite parts of the week were band rehearsal and jazz band rehearsal. So... I majored in Chemistry.
Sorry, Manny, but Donne's brilliance goes beyond personal preference. I know you mean "okay to me" but really it should never be phrased like that. I think that even if one doesn't love his poetry one should love his ability and learn to appreciate all that is a Donne poem (the complexity, the richness, the symbolism, the lyricism). Does that make any sense? Have you read any Rilke? Translation is obviously crucial and sticky but all will have quality. Vintage has a collection translated by Stephen Mitchell and that is always a good starting point.
He would've gotten honest answers if he asked sooner and followed my plan. Poor guy probably made up some numbers on the fly.
Stanford has some classes online for free (very few, but the seminars are interesting if you like that sort of thing): http://scpd.stanford.edu. bigtexx - Rice has an equivalent to OCW called Connexions (that actually came out earlier and is larger collaboration with universities and industry around the world): http://cnx.rice.edu. And, in general, you can always look for course websites and pull lecture notes from there. But who wants to learn without lectures?
Yes that makes sense, rimmy. I understand completely and agree. Well, I doubt it considering I have never even heard of the name. In all seriousness, I will have to do some looking into Rilke and see what I can find and take it from there.
I would like to go back and learn more in Asian Studies, my minor. I have 2 years of Mandarin Chinese, but I still feel like I have so much to learn and I speak much better than I think I will ever be able to write it. We had an Asian Philosophy class that was an overview of several Eastern ideas, but I would like to study Confucianism and the writings of Chung Tzu more exclusively. In other subjects - I took a Hitchcock class, where we really studied him and his body of work. We got to see all his films on the big screen, and then debate the techniques and themes used. I would love to take a class on many directors mainly Akira Kurosawa, Cohen Brothers, etc. That p*rn class at the University of Iowa wouldnt be bad either.
currently majoring in biology and poli sci, pretty heavy load, guess thats what colleges for.....guess manny's post made me realize that i gota take more courses than my majors requires so later i wont be like damn i wish im 18-20 cause i would have taken these courses... to manny: i dont drink vodka anymore ok?? i am not planning on start...at ALL, so please stopping posting "are you vodka-ing??"
I wish I had taken a class on Nietzsche. I'm reading The Gay Science right now and cannot believe I waited so long to read Nietzsche.
