Maybe this is unfounded, but other boards are reporting that Ariza may have gotten into a heated argument with another of the Rockets players (they're saying Brooks) and management is worrying about chemistry issues down the road.

Obviously not a reliable source by any means but just something to speculate about.

    On Defense:
No matter how good Courtney plays on offense this year, his biggest contribution is going to be on the defensive end this year. Courtney Lee just seems to have a desire to play defense, and he shows that with his aggressive play on the defensive end. Courtney Lee held the opposition to a PER was 15.0, which means. Plus, there aren’t many players who can make Kobe admit that he is frustrated, let alone a rookie. I just love it when young players work on the defensive end, because they are going to struggle on the offensive end from time to time, but they are still able to contribute positively with their defense. Courtney Lee already is this team’s defensive stopper (Trenton Hassel doesn’t really count), and if he can reach his potential offensively, he can become a superstar for the Nets.

    --

    Also, Lee won't be starting.

For once, I am going to have to agree with you.

I can't imagine why people are saying we are better.

Shane will be our starting SF again.....ya the 31 year old no-stat guy. I can't wait for his only offensive shot in the game...the corner 3 ball.

Yes it does make the team better.......

    The TEAM better....

It is not about individual talent but how they help the Rockets TEAM....

Trevor adds nothing to the team that others don't already do better...and his contract is longer....(just a big benefit to this deal).

Too many players, not enough minutes = disaster for chemistry.

This was a very good move.......sure it was a salary dump, but a damned smart one.

Well that makes me feel much better. I am all for this trade if that means Budinger is taking his next step as a starter. Battier is not good anymore as a starter. Thats why we cant trade him. Budinger moving forward makes sense to get Courtney Lee because it looks like Budinger could devolop past Ariza. I am just worried about Adelman and his system of giving away his minutes to veterans regardless of how good they play like Battier and Hayes. Budinger if he gets the starting role and we added a Courtney Lee to back up Martin? That sounds good to me...

We aren't starting Lee and Martin at the same time. Sheesh. Lee will be the backup/starter for 20 games when Martin is out. Quite the upgrade over Jermaine Taylor, if I may say so.

This move is all about Chase Budinger. With Battier healthy, that made three small forwards on the team who all deserved minutes. Somebody had to go. Battier's value to the team goes beyond his contributions on the floor; he's a captain. His contract is also expiring, so if Yao turns out to be done, we aren't stuck with Battier. Budinger is coming off a great rookie season, he's vital to the bench brigade, and there's no way he's sitting behind both Battier and Ariza. Much as Alston was moved to make room for Brooks, Ariza is moved to make room for Bud. Wouldn't be surprised to see him starting soon.

Ariza played fine after Martin arrived, but I'd hardly call him irreplaceable, particularly when he's the fifth option on offense no matter who he's playing with and he's got Shane Battier right behind him. I was not particularly impressed with his defense, although his effort was high against Kobe. Is he a better player than Lee? Well, he certainly has more rings (ring?). I'm not so sure he's $10 million better than Lee, though, are you? Ariza was good on the break, but so are Budinger and Lee.

We had a logjam at the 3 threatening to hold Bud back. That's been resolved. It saves the Rockets $28 million over the next few years. And we have a legit backup 2 (with upside!) capable of starting when Martin is out. Sure it's a money move, but it keeps the team healthy. The Rockets will perhaps be no better off this season with Lee instead of Ariza, but I don't think they're worse.

I didn't say he was a genius, I said this trade sounded like a Morey deal.

True, Ariza does like to carry a sour-puss look on his face when he doesn't get the ball....

This team looks to be a 6th seed for the 2011 playoffs.

What trade would YOU make to get Chase more minutes?

Just because Ariza's potential may be maximized in NO, doesn't mean we hurt our team.

Greattt, wow we must LOVE undersized players in the Rockets organization.

    PG - 6'0" AB, 6'1" Lowry
SG - 6'7" boney Kevin Martin, 6'5" JT, 6'5" Lee
    SF - 6'8" Battier, 6'7" Budinger

And we are trying to bring defense back this year?? lmao. They are trying to get under the salary cap because of the seemingly "high priced contract" of Ariza...yet they sign a 34/35 year old Brad Miller to 5 mil a year?? Wow, Les Alexander is a b*tch....going all in?? haha right. Morey u have lost major credibility...unbelievable

Who says we're trying to trade Battier? By all accounts Morey adores Battier. I don't doubt they'd include Battier in a trade if it improved the team, but there have been no indications they are actively seeking to trade him.

He is clouded by his "Battier" fetish.

Don't worry, Leeb the org will do something with Shane by the deadline...you are just going to have to wait to see what it is....

Carter has playmaking abilities that Lee will likely never possess and perhaps the Magic liked that. Maybe they value veterans over youngsters. And don't forget that Ryan Anderson was included in the deal as well.

Carter is not garbage. And being undervalued by a team does not make Lee garbage. Orlando didn't want a dirt-cheap Lowry, either. Their opinions do not hold more importance than Morey's.

Well, no one wants battier. I know thats hard for anyone to believe, but its the straight up truth. He will expire as a rockets because no team wants him. I don't mind trading any player on this roster. My ties are to the front of the jersey, not the back and i have made this known. Saying this makes us younger is a joke and saying it makes us better is a bigger joke. The biggest joke is all in this year and patting les on the back for spending money. We all knew more players would be moved to get under the line. Les has said he will spend for special team and special players. The rockets don't have any of that right now nor can they get that special player either. I just wish they stop fooling around and pull the plug and start over with the young guys. It will be much easier and save everyone this p.r. spinning they do all the time.

It seems like they were always frustrated with each other on the court...

I hate this deal. So much for Les paying the luxury tax to field a better team. What a crock of bull****.

I wanted to get rid of Ariza as much as anyone earlier in the season last year, but as soon as we got Martin, I really liked how Trevor played when all the pressure wasn't on him. Was really looking forward to see him play next to Yao.

Shane is not an NBA starter anymore and is a HUGE injury risk, and I seriously hesitate to put Buddinger out there guarding starting small forwards. I seriously would rather have Ariza starting than either of those two.

I see this as Les sacrificing youth (trading a young starter for a young bench player), length, and defense, so the Rockets can save some money. That's all this is to me. Nothing against Courtney Lee. I think he's a fine backup two-guard, but this just doesn't make much sense from a basketball perspective.

I liked Trevor because Kobe used to go easy on us because of him.

Um...only the PG's are a bit undersized, everyone else is regular sized in your post.
