While this deal does somewhat make sense, I still don't like it.

Ariza is a starter and a great complementary player. Lee is just to fill a BACKUP need. Downgrade imo.

Agree with this. Those who know me around here know my opinion on Ariza and his utter lack of fundamental basketball skills in many crucial aspects. But what is up with the sudden about-face with Adelman then? Last season it was like Ariza had some secret compromising photos of Adelman with a mistress or something -- the amount of playing time he was rewarded with over more talented options like Budinger and Taylor was baffling, to say the least.

The first part of this I'm not so sure I agree with. On offense, he's a good 3 point shooter who will space the floor much better than Ariza. Otherwise, he actually sports worse overall efficiency numbers than Ariza during his two year career and was particularly awful during the playoffs with Orlando. He does seem to be a pretty good defender though, and that counts for something.

Agree completely. I think this move opens the door for Budinger to get a lot more time in the rotation, and by all accounts the staff is very high on him.

This I think is the number one reason. Ariza is obviously not worth the salary he's getting paid. From a monetary point of view, the deal makes a lot of sense. From a basketball point of view, it's a little more murky.

    Love the trade...

    1) Saves us money (19 mil)
    2) Gets us another young gun with so much potential at a cheaper cost. Can grow with our young core. A great defender (makes kobe fustrated!?). Has a willingness to learn and an all around game.
    3) Great shooting percentages, FG to FT, which works around Yao.
    4) Gives us that solid SG position player that we really lack.. (NO more Battriza :D)
    5) If Ariza fails in NO, CP3 will be more willing to get traded.

He did. He did a decent job at it too, despite being far shorter and a rookie.

Ya 1 one a ring playing as a role player.

The other missed the layup and landed on the worst team in the league.

I'm not understanding why people say we got younger with this deal, Ariza and Lee only have an age difference of 4 months.

20 mins per game is fine from Battier.

C-bud will get the rest.

Well, it saves the team over $10 million this year and Lee is an upgrade over Taylor but I don't want Battier out there 30+ mins/game.

Kobe is going to have his best games against us. Ariza was the only one that could stop him.

I predict our first loss in the opener and kobe drops at least 35 points

Like many fans on this site, my first reaction to this was @#$@%!??? After all that hype this summer about the possibility of Bosh, and then trying to find console in potential Granger/Iggy/Paul rumors, this was a major let down. This, my friends, is why we are not GMs because our emotions often makes us biased. After taking a deep breath, I tried to look at this latest move by Morey more objectively.

    1. First and foremost, any moves regarding the roster has to make basketball sense for now and the near future. Ariza is a decent young player worth his contract. The Rox gave him the "go" signal last year and after having the full season to analyze him up-close, management must've realized that Ariza as a player has peaked. Ariza could be replaced by Battier/Chase without much of a dropoff in terms of production. Morey must've felt that losing Ariza and gaining C. Lee was favorable for the Rox regardless of the payroll situation. Do you guys remember a couple years back when we shipped out our starting pg Rafer (starting sf ariza) for a backup pg Lowry from another lowly team (C. Lee)? The trade was met with similar skepticism then but look how it turned out. In summary, this means that the team has a lot of faith in Bud and believe that Lee>Ariza sometime soon, if not already.

    2. This deal balances our roster and primes the team for a major upcoming deal. Hill, Jeffries, one of our SF, and the NY picks are our main tradeable assets. When it was initially reported that we traded Mac and Landry to Sac last year, there were mixed feelings because we didn't see the whole picture where we got Hill/Jef/picks as well. It seems like this is a similar situation. Look on the brightside; we didn't even have to take on any contract dumps like Cook or Jeffries with this trade.

    3. Financially it makes sense. This move saves the team a lot of money which can be used to facilitate future expensive moves. I believe that Les is still committed to spending what it takes to win. He will open the purse for the right player.

In short, I can say that this may be one of Morey's best moves yet because it makes basketball sense, sets the team up for future trades, and saves unnecessarily spent money. Have some faith fellow fans.

I will certainly not miss Ariza's failures at the free throw line.

Lee was a starter on a team that went to the finals 2 years ago.
