I feel like we might become the g.s warriors. All offense and 0 defense.

I don't think that after last year when team's saw Trevor's overall game exposed for what it is, they would give much up for him.

He is a role player, he can't dribble, gets beat on defense a lot, can't shoot that well, is not particularly good as a passer.

He is a nice complimentary piece, and truly needs a good PG or passer to set the table for him.

And the team is loaded at the SF position already.....everything Trevor does someone else at that position can do as well and in most cases better.

Last year, he looked like Battier's replacement, but with CBud and Jeffries on the roster now...he looked redundant.

its a great move, we save money on tax, get a better shooter and better cutter and player more willing to run. And above all, we get a legit backup sg and more play for chase. love it. dont sleep on Lee, he was a key piece to Orlando's finals run 2 years ago even as a rook.

I think people are forgetting how good Battier is.

After being initially a bit stunned, here are my thoughts to sum up the deal:

    - Adelman must have felt that Ariza really didn't fit in the offense and never would, despite improvement once Kevin Martin got here. Kind of makes you scratch your head as to why they signed him in the first place, but at least they're correcting their blunder now

    - This feels almost EXACTLY like the Rafer/Lowry deal. Inefficency traded for efficiency and a guy that plays better defense (I'm pretty stoked after reading some scouting reports on Lee's defense, and apparently he is cheap for three more years)

    - Budinger is going to get some pretty heavy minutes. And Battier starting is where he's at his best. Those two combined plus Lee gives you more than Ariza provided. Also good insurance for K-Mart's lack of durability.

    - A little disappointed to not see Ariza in a full season, but the guy was going to be our 5th option. Nothing to lose sleep over.

    - Along with the salary dump, we'll probably have a nice trade exception to throw into our bucket of assets. We are still poised to add a star the next time one comes available...along those lines, it's getting ridiculous to see DD and others argue about the luxury tax. We might not pay it now, but once we are ready to strike via trade for a star we are going to have no choice but to pay it -- it's the only way to contend. This is simply Morey/Les waiting to pay it until the time is right, and that time could still be this season.

Go back and re-read the post that I replied to. The quote that I responded to was complaining because guys like Brooks, Scola and Battier were rumored in trade talks. Who were Brooks and Scola rumored to be traded for? Bosh and Chris Paul. Obviously those guys are larger pieces.

Salary dump, but I truly believe Lee has more potential than Ariza, who
has plateaued. Like REEKO_HTOWN said, we don't have much shot at winning
right now anyways, but we should make some noise. And has anyone noticed
that Morey has slowly built one of the best young rosters in the league??

After thinking about it for a few, I think we got pretty good value for Ariza. We save money, get a shorter contract for a much better shooter and decent defender, backup the 2 and get more flexible during the trade deadline.

I think it's safe to say Battier will remain on our roster then.. It was down to either one of them getting traded...

He's a much better version than Shane Battier. Trade Battier, oh wait, we can't because know one wants an unathletic SF who scores 5 points a game for $7 mln a year.

I can't argue with your points. Outside of Yao, Miller, and Luis, we've got one of the younger teams in the league.

I think this is one of the reasons I'm worried.

I don't have a lot of experience with watching Lee outside of those playoffs. He played really nice pesky defense but I remember I was always pissed at his offense and his inability to get points in that series. His year in NJ might have helped some though.

After having some time I think the deal isn't as awful as I thought. Certainly if it pans out it'll be a great move. But if it doesn't work I'm definitely going to be upset-- by all accounts I thought we were going all-in this year to try and steal the championship from under everyone's noses.

Now I have to watch Battier starting for a full season with his no-stat skills and his only 3 point corner shooting and 1 year older at 31.

I love Shane in the old roster, but not when we had Ariza who basically for me was Battier replacement who can play Defense and was actually more of a scoring threat than Battier.

    Battier gets paid more.

Many of you can argue that Ariza was not given a decent chance to show how he can play in a role next to Yao and Martin. But there are many benefits to this trade:

-First off, we save a lot of money by dumping Ariza's 6.1 mil for Lee's much smaller contract. In terms of comparing contract size to talent level, Lee is a much better value.
-This also gives Chase Budinger a chance to get more minutes. You can compare this trade to the Alston trade, which gave Brooks the ability to grow into his game. Chase has already shown himself to be a better shooter, playmaker, and having better court awareness than Ariza. Although Chase's defense is not as good, I can see Budinger fitting in better into Adelman's system better than Ariza.
-We get a good player in Courtney Lee, who plays good defense, has the ability to attack the basket, is maybe more offensively skilled than Ariza, and is a high character person. He fits the mold of a Rocket player. He fits in well into that backup 2 spot, and he can still play a little at the 3.
-Ariza was acquired last summer primarily to play along side Yao. However, there are uncertainties of Yao's health and durability. Eventually, this team will need to move on without Yao. Getting Lee is a good step in acquiring team-oriented players.
-Also, for most of his first year in Houston, Trevor looked uncomfortable with his role in Adelman's defense. His shooting was very inconsistent, and didn't quite know how to play within the flow of the offense. He played better with Martin in the lineup, but I feel the team plays just as effectively (if not better) with Budinger or Battier at the 3.
